Austin Peay touched Memphis pitchers for a season-high 19 hits, and the Tiger defense committed a season-high seven errors in a 14-7 loss at Pringles Park, Tuesday afternoon. The U of M falls to 1-8 in midweek play and 13-16 overall. The Governors improve to 16-12.
A 5-for-5 effort from Matt Kole led the offensive barrage for the visitors. The Govs' DH homered, legged out three doubles and added a single in Austin Peay's first five-hit performance since 2008. He collected hits in the third (double), fourth (home run), fifth (single) and sixth innings (double).
The Govs jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Memphis was able to get on the board in the fourth inning. Drew Martinez led the frame off with a walk. Chad Zurcher and Tyler Huelsing singled in consecutive at-bats. Huelsing's hit scored Martinez for the Tiger's first run of the night. Zurcher came in on a fielder's choice groundout by Rick Russell to make it 6-2.
Two Tiger errors in the fifth led to three Governor's runs as the Memphis deficit ballooned to seven runs. APSU extended its cushion to 13-2 on the strength of six hits in the sixth inning. A two-run double by Kole highlighted the four-run stanza.
Memphis threatened to put up a big inning in the bottom of the sixth after Zurcher led off with a double to the rightfield wall. Tyler Huelsing walked and Russell singled to load the bases. Jacob Wilson's RBI-single to right center scored Zurcher and kept the bases loaded with no one out. However, APSU starter Eric Davis induced an infield fly and an inning-ending double play to end the Tiger's rally.
Consecutive RBI-doubles in the ninth by Zurcher, Heith Hatfield and Wilson, powered a four-run ninth inning for the 14-7 final.
Zurcher led the Memphis offense with three hits and two RBI. Huelsing and Wilson finished the night with two hits each. The Tigers were out-hit 19-11 in the game.
Memphis freshman Dan Langfield was hooked with the loss after giving up six runs (four earned) on nine hits in 3.1 innings. Tiger relievers Ben Paullus, Jonathan Jones and Marcus Barnes gave up a combined eight runs. Brandon Showmar and Marc Ashley held the Governors scoreless over the final two innings of play. APSU starter Eric Davis was effective in seven innings. He scattered seven hits and held Memphis to three runs.
The Tigers will return to action tomorrow, when they host UL-Monroe at FedExPark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
