Memphis Suffers First American Conference Tournament Loss Against Top-Seeded UTSA

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The University of Memphis (24-33) baseball team suffered the first loss of its postseason campaign, falling to No. 1 seed UTSA (37-19), 4-0, at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Fla. in the American Conference Tournament.
The Tigers managed five hits on the afternoon but were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities, stranding eight runners and finishing 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position. UTSA pitching struck out 12 Memphis batters and held the Tigers scoreless across nine innings.
Shane Cox led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance, while Freddy Rodriguez, Javon Hernandez and Michael Gupton each added a hit. Hernandez also reached base twice with a walk.
Seth Garner (1-6) turned in a quality start on the mound despite taking the loss, allowing three earned runs across 6.0 innings while striking out two. Logan Rushing followed with two innings of relief and surrendered one run.
Memphis will now face No. 7 seed Wichita State in an elimination game later tonight, with first pitch scheduled for 47 minutes following the conclusion of the Rice and UAB matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Memphis threatened in the third inning after Marcus Smith drew a walk and Javon Hernandez singled to put runners on the corners, but UTSA escaped the jam and kept the game scoreless.
- The Roadrunners broke through in the bottom of the third as Drew Detlefsen lined an RBI double to left-center to score Aidan Eshelman and take a 1-0 lead.
- UTSA added another run in the fourth on Christian Hallmark's RBI double before extending the advantage in the sixth with a sacrifice fly from Jordan Ballin.
- Memphis put together another threat in the sixth after Hernandez walked and Shane Cox singled, but the Roadrunners stranded both runners to preserve the shutout.
- UTSA added its final run in the seventh on Andrew Stucky's RBI single and closed out the 4-0 victory.
