Tigers Open AAC Play on the Road at South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Memphis baseball team hits the road for Tampa, Florida on Thursday for a three-game series at South Florida, Friday through Sunday, to open American Athletic Conference play.
The Tigers (11-12) went 4-1 last week, picking up a pair of home midweek wins over North Alabama and Arkansas State before going on the road and taking a series at the University of New Orleans, two games to one – scoring 12-plus runs for the seventh time this season in the second game of a Saturday double header. Memphis dropped a roller-coaster midweek game at No. 21 Mississippi State (16-6), 17-9, on Tuesday night after jumping out to a 9-3 lead.
The Bulls (12-9) enter AAC-opening weekend after dropping a midweek game at Florida Gulf Coast, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon and before coming from behind to defeat Florida A&M on Wednesday night at home, 9-6.
Red McEwen Field at USF Baseball Stadium will play host to the 63rd, 64th and 65th all-time meetings between the Tigers and Bulls, with USF holding a 34-28 all-time advantage. The Tigers earned a home sweep of the Bulls last season (May 5-8) at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field and have won five of the last six matchups.
All three games of the series will be live streamed on ESPN+ and will be available to stream on GoTigersGo.com with Jeff Brightwell on the audio call.
The Memphis offense has lit up the scoreboard during the first month of the season and leads The American with 177 runs scored through 23 games (7.7 runs per game). The Tigers have slugged 37 long balls to lead the league and rank 19th in the nation. Memphis' 48 doubles rank 30th in the NCAA and leads the AAC, while its 209 hits are second in the league and No. 30 in the country.
The Tigers' 44 stolen bases lead The American and rank 17th in the country and their 119 walks drawn rank 35th in the NCAA and lead the conference. Defensively, Memphis has turned the 22nd-most double plays in the country (18).
Seth Cox was named the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Player of the Week after a breakout week for the Tigers at the dish, batting .471 and collecting eight hits (four for extra bases) while smashing three home runs and driving in a dozen runs for a staggering 1.609 OPS on the week. He slugged a home run at No. 21 Mississippi State on Tuesday night to make it four home runs in the past six games.
Pierre Seals leads the Tigers with a .345 batting average and is tied with Austin Baskin and Daunte Stuart for the team lead in hits (29). Seals leads the AAC with 11 stolen bases – including three in last Sunday's 12-10 win over New Orleans in which he went 4-for-6 at the plate. Baskin extended his lengthy on-base streak to 36 games dating back to last season, including all 23 games this season.
Stuart has also reached base in all 23 games to start the season in addition to the final 18 games last season while playing for Northwestern State to bring his current streak to 41 games. The Bahamas native is No. 14 in the NCAA and leads the AAC with 10 doubles. His 27 runs scored are the second most in the league, lead the club and are the 44th most in the country.
Closer Brayden Sanders recorded a save in Friday night's 5-4 win at UNO and came back to save the second game of Saturday's double header with the Privateers in a 12-10 win to add to his conference-leading total of five (T-No. 3 in NCAA).
Center fielder Will Marcy is riding a six-game hit streak and is batting .320 on the year with four doubles, a home run and eight RBI from the top of the Tiger lineup. The speedy N.C. State transfer has added six stolen bases while fielding 1.000.
Memphis will roll out the same weekend rotation it has ridden the entirety of the season, with RHP David Warren (2-1, 4.08 ERA) set to get the Friday start, LHP Luke Ellis (0-2, 6.00 ERA) slated to throw Saturday and RHP Caden Robinson (1-1, 6.65 ERA) on the bump in Sunday's finale.
The Bulls will counter with a rotation of RHP Hunter Mink (1-2, 3.46 ERA) on Friday, RHP Jack Cebert (2-1, 4.62 ERA) on Saturday and RHP Bryce Archie (0-1, 7.11 ERA) in Sunday's finale.
Offensively, South Florida is led by preseason AAC Player of the Year Bobby Boser's seven home runs, 24 RBI and .300 batting average, while a trio of additional Bulls are batting over .350 (John Montes, Drew Brutcher, Jackson Mayo).
