Stuart Hits for Cycle, Tigers Tromp USF 16-7 to Open AAC Play
Mar 22, 2024 | Baseball
The Tigers got back to .500 (12-12, 1-0 AAC) overall with the win while the Bulls fell to 12-10 (0-1 AAC) on the season.
"I was really proud of our offense," head coach Matt Riser said. "I thought they were as locked in on a Friday night guy as they could possibly be. We had a great approach and did some great things in advantage counts, and a great job with two strikes and getting guys in from third."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• South Florida's Ben Rozenblum put the Bulls on the board with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning.
• Stuart got the home run out of the way early in his quest for the cycle, hitting his fourth long ball of the season, a solo shot, in the top of the second inning.
• The Bull's Drew Brutcher singled up the middle and drove in the third run of the game for the Bulls in the bottom of the second to give them a 3-1 lead.
• An eight-run third inning was started when Will Marcy scored on a wild pitch to trim the deficit to one. Austin Baskin blasted his fifth home run of the season to left-center field to put another pair of runs on the board. That led to a two-run double by Pierre Seals, an RBI single by Jake Curtis and then an opposite-field, two-run shot by catcher Brennan DuBose put an exclamation mark on the eight-run frame.
• Jacob Compton added on with his AAC-leading ninth home run of the season with a two-run shot that put the Tigers up 11-3 in the fourth.
• Seth Cox made it five different Tigers with home runs on the night and four-consecutive innings with a long ball with his two-run shot in the top of the fifth. It marked the fifth home run for Cox in his last seven games.
• Compton added a double to his stat line in the fifth to give him three RBI on the night and give Memphis an 11-run advantage. Seals drove in one more run in the frame to give the Tigers a 15-3 lead.
• The Bulls got a pair of runs back in the fifth with a two-run home run and scored two more in the sixth. Memphis scored its 16th run on an error in the sixth and won by a final of 16-7.
• Stuart completed his cycle with a triple in the top of the ninth to fire the Tiger dugout up.
NOTABLES
• The eight-run third inning matched the highest-scoring inning of the season for the Tigers, who also put up eight runs at home on Feb. 25 in a 13-7 win over Bowling Green.
• The 16 runs matched the most by the Tigers this season and marked the eighth time this season scoring 12 or more runs.
• Stuart completed his cycle and 5-for-5 night with a triple in the top of the ninth to fire the Tiger dugout up. He also scored four runs and walked once.
• Compton and Seals both notched three hits on the night. Compton drove in three and added to his AAC-leading home run total. Seals ended the night 3-for-6 with a double and a run scored and stole his 12th bag of the season.
• Alex Fernandes walked four times, scored three runs and stole a pair of bags.
