Tigers Fall to No. 21 Bulldogs in Starkville
Mar 19, 2024 | Baseball
The Tigers dropped to a game under .500 on the season (11-12) with the loss while the No. 21 Bulldogs improved to 16-6 overall.
Memphis used a five-run fifth inning to jump out to a 9-3 lead, but it was all Mississippi State from the bottom of the fifth inning on as it scored 14 unanswered runs.
"I was proud of the way we came out and swung the bat and grabbed a big lead," Memphis head coach Matt Riser said. "These middle innings are killing us, and we have to be better, not only on the mound but also defensively. We have to do a good job of getting some things fixed these next couple of days to get ready for conference play."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Dakota Jordan put the Bulldogs on the board with a two-run home run for his 11th of the season in the bottom of the first.
• A ground-rule double into the right-field corner by Jacob Compton gave Memphis a run right back in the top of the second inning. Compton's double led to a two-out single by Riley Davis that drove in Compton and allowed Brennan DuBose to score on a throwing error by the left fielder to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.
• A solo home run by the Bulldogs tied the game at 3-3 momentarily in the bottom of the third before an RBI groundout by Jake Curtis in the top of the fourth drove in Seals to give Memphis the lead back immediately.
• It looked as if the Tigers were in the midst of busting the game wide open in the top of the fifth when Seth Cox blasted a three-run shot (his fourth long ball in the past six games) to give Memphis a 7-3 advantage. Compton added on with his second double of the contest, driving in Austin Baskin and Daunte Stuart to extend the lead to 9-3.
• The Bulldogs were unphased and responded with seven runs of their own (four with two outs) in the bottom of the frame to stun the Tigers and take a 10-9 lead.
• Mississippi State added a run in the sixth and four more in the seventh, the bulk of them coming on a three-run homer to put the Bulldogs up 15-9.
• The Bulldogs tacked on a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the eighth and Memphis went down quietly as Mississippi State won the roller-coaster game, 17-9.
NOTABLES
• Stuart (41 games) and Baskin (36 games) both extended their on-base streaks in the loss. Stuart went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs while Baskin ended the game 1-for-4 and scored once.
• Compton ended the night 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI.
• Davis made his fifth start of the season and drove in a run and scored once with a pair of hits.
• Seth Cox stayed hot at the dish and smashed his fourth home run in a week's time to drive in three runs in the loss.
• Cade Davis got the start on the mound and pitched three innings, allowing three runs on four hits and notching a strikeout.
• Jackson Lyons was credited with the loss (0-1), going 1.1 innings and giving up a pair of runs on four hits and two walks.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers hit the road Thursday morning and head to Tampa, Florida, for a three-game weekend series at South Florida (11-8) Friday through Sunday to open American Athletic Conference play.
