Tigers Fall to Tulane on Senior Day at FedExPark
May 10, 2025 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped game two of a three-game American Athletic Conference series, 3-0, to Tulane on Saturday afternoon at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field. Fifteen seniors were honored before the game as part of Senior Day festivities.
The Tigers moved to 20-30 (7-16 AAC) overall while the Green Wave improved to 30-20 (13-10 AAC) on the season.
"We've pitched it really well this weekend," head coach Matt Riser said. "Because of that, we've put ourselves in a really good position for tomorrow to be successful, we just have to go out and do it. The offense is very capable, and we've shown that. We can go score runs and we just need to be able to be one run better. Stay on the importance of tomorrow and the value of tomorrow."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• LHP David Case made his 13th start of the season on the mound for Memphis and was sharp out of the gate, retiring seven of the first Green Wave batters he faced.
• Tulane got its only run off of Case with a solo home run by Theo Bryant Jr. in the top of the fourth inning. The lefty responded with three-straight strikeouts to get out of the inning.
• Cade Greer and Justin Fogel led off the bottom of the sixth inning with back-to-back singles before Shane Cox walked to load the bases with nobody out. Chase Nixon stepped to the plate and scorched a 102-miles-per-hour line drive at the Tulane first baseman who stepped on the bag to double off Cox at first, squandering the Memphis momentum. Jack Pitts followed it up with a walk to load the bases once again, but Michael Politte went down on strikes, leaving the bases full of Tigers.
• Memphis was unable to string anything together offensively the rest of the way, and Tulane added a pair of runs in the ninth inning after a defensive miscue by the Tigers. The Green Wave completed the 3-0 shutout of the Tigers and clinched the series win.
NOTABLES
• Case had one of his best two starts as a Tiger, throwing six innings of one-run baseball. He scattered five hits and punched out six while walking just two. He took the loss to fall to 1-7 on the season.
• Shane Cox went 2-for-2 and was on base all four times, working a pair of walks. He ripped his 11th double of the season.
• Greer finished the game 2-for-5 from the lead-off spot.
• Creek Robertson doubled off the right-field wall – his 10th of the season.
• Fogel, Will Vasseur and Daniel Perez each recorded a hit.
• RHP Charlie Smith threw 2.1 effective innings in relief of Case, allowing one run (unearned) on four hits, striking out two and walking one.
• David Case, Jonah Sutton, Creek Robertson, Shane Cox, Seth Cox, Kylan Stepter, Justin Fogel, Brayden Sanders, Logan Rushing, Davis Oswalt, Chase Nixon, Cade Tucker, Michael Dallas, Luke Ellis, Brandon Chorzelewski were all honored pregame as part of Senior Day festivities.
