Tigers Fall in Close Contest at East Carolina on Sunday

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Memphis (15-24, 4-11 AAC) softball dropped a close contest against East Carolina (23-16, 9-6 AAC) on Sunday by a score of 4-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both sides went scoreless in the first three innings.
- Memphis had a runner stranded at second base in each frame.
- The first run for either side came across when Chloe Geijer singled to left field, with Anna Sawyer scoring on a fielding error.
- Geijer, who advanced to second on the throw, also was awarded third base due to obstruction during the play.
- Three defensive miscues in the fifth inning allowed Memphis to take the lead.
- Arianna Cox-Cole singled to right field and reached third when the ensuing throw went out of play, which allowed Ariel Davis to score.
- In the next at-bat, Neely Taylor hit a groundball off the glove of the first baseman, scoring Cox-Cole on the play.
- After Zoe Adebayo walked, Faith Brown reached on a second error by East Carolina's first baseman, allowing Taylor to score.
- Gabby Fowler extended the East Carolina lead to seven with a grand slam.
- A two-run home run by Morgan Johnson in the bottom of the fifth inning tied the game at three runs apiece.
- Memphis left runners at second and third in the top of the sixth after drawing two walks in the frame.
- East Carolina regained the lead in the bottom half of the sixth with an RBI single by Mary-Kathryn Scott.
- Kendall Frost reentered in the top of the seventh and earned the save for East Carolina, retiring the final three batters.
- All of Memphis' three runs scored were unearned as East Carolina committed three errors in the top of the fifth inning.
- Memphis was swept in a conference series for the second time this season.
- The Tigers have lost nine of their last 10 games since March 21.
- For the first time this season, Memphis played a full series without a player recording a multi-hit performance.
- Zoe Adebayo went 1-for-1 at the plate with three walks drawn.
- Ariel Davis reached base three times in the series finale, with one hit and two walks. She also recorded one run scored during Memphis' three-run fifth inning.
- Neely Taylor finished with one hit, her 40th of the season.
- Taylor also recorded her 39th start of the season, which leads Memphis.
