Tigers’ Seventh-Inning Rally Quelled in Series Finale Loss

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The University of Memphis (14-30, 3-15 American) softball team stranded the game-tying run on base for the second time in the series, falling to Charlotte (25-19, 10-8 American) by a score of 5-4 Sunday.
The Tigers battled back from a four-run deficit but stranded the game-winning run at second to end the game after producing three runs in the seventh.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Memphis is set for a full week of home games, beginning with a midweek game against Alcorn State (13-26, 1-14 SWAC) before hosting North Texas (24-19, 13-5 American) for Parents Weekend.

Reserved seating tickets must be purchased if adults would like them to have a seat in the bleachers.
As a reminder, fans are not permitted to bring umbrellas into the venue and Tigers Softball Complex has a clear bag policy.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams recorded hits but were held scoreless in the first, with Isabella Hune singling to lead off the game.
- The Tigers and 49ers combined for five hits in the second with no runs scoring.
- Charlotte opened the scoring with a four-spot in the third on an RBI single, sacrifice fly and a pair of Memphis throwing errors.
- After singles by Kayla Clement and Paris Brienesse and a walk by Deana Cunningham, Isabella Hune picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded walk.
- Taniyah Brown entered in relief with two runners on in the fourth and induced a popout, foul out and a groundout to keep the deficit at three.
- The Tigers stranded runners at second and third in the fifth after Mya Clark and Ariel Davis reached on singles.
- Charlotte extended its lead with an RBI single by Sydney Lewis in the bottom of the sixth to make the game 5-1.
- The Tigers threatened with three runs in the seventh before leaving the game-winning run stranded at seventh to end the game.
- Mya Clark, Ariel Davis and Kayla Clement each singled in three of the first four at-bats.
- Deana Cunningham delivered with a hard shot off the shortstop's glove to bring in two runs and cut into the deficit.
- Isabella Hune singled to short left field to bring another run home and cut the deficit to just one run.
- With the game-winning run on second in Hune, Jasmine Mack grounded out in her only at-bat of the game to end it.
- After this series, the Tigers have 38 sacrifice hits, which would be tied for the third-most nationally.
- Memphis now has 54 stolen bases on the year, which stands as the ninth-most in a single season in program history.
- Isabella Hune was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI on the day, reaching a total of four times with two walks.
- It was Hune's third-career multi-RBI game, previously doing so against Arlington Baptist and Jackson State while at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
- Hune becomes the fifth Tiger to reach at least 10 walks on the season.
- Deana Cunningham was 2-for-3 on the day with two RBI and a walk.
- Cunningham now has three multi-RBI games in her first season as a Tiger.
- Cunningham also now has 112 defensive assists at shortstop, good for seventh in the NCAA.
- Kayla Clement notched her second-consecutive multi-hit game, also scoring twice.
- Half of Clement's four multi-hit games have come this weekend.
- Mya Clark had a multi-hit game in the loss, scoring once.
- Ariel Davis was 1-for-3, also drawing a walk and coming around to score once.
- Davis continues to lead Memphis with 45 hits, 28 runs and 17 walks on the year.
- Paris Brienesse was 1-for-1 with a walk and a stolen base.
- Brienesse continues to lead the Tigers with 11 stolen bases and is two shy of reaching 50 stolen bases at the Division I level.
- Neely Taylor logged one hit in the loss.
- Avery Stutts went one inning in the loss, striking out one batter.
- She now has a team-leading 40 strikeouts in her freshman season.
