SAN ANTONIO – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped game one of a three-game American Athletic Conference series to UTSA, 12-2, in seven innings on Friday night at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas.
The Tigers moved to 16-25 (4-12 AAC) on the season while the league-leading Roadrunners improved to 31-10 (13-3 AAC) on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Memphis outfielder Chase Nixon put the Tigers on the board in the top of the second inning with an opposite-field solo shot to give him his sixth home run of the season and the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
• UTSA struck for three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Preseason AAC Player of the Year Mason Lytle drove in the first run before a pair of sac-flies gave the Roadrunners a 3-1 lead.
• The Roadrunners added to their lead with a five-run fifth inning. A home run by UTSA slugger James Taussig accounted for three of them before an RBI double and an RBI single later in the frame made the score 8-1, UTSA.
• A sixth-inning grand slam by Roadrunner Ty Hodge extended the UTSA lead to 12-1.
• After a one-out walk by Daniel Perez in the top of the seventh inning, freshman Jack Pitts pinch hit and doubled off the top of the right-center field wall, leading to an RBI ground out by Cade Greer to make the score 12-2, Roadrunners. The one run would be all the Tigers got in the frame as UTSA took game one of the series, 12-2, in seven innings.
NOTABLES
• Senior catcher Jonah Sutton made his return to the Tiger lineup after a 10-game absence. He threw out his 16th runner of the season and has now thrown out 48 percent of runners on the season, ranking among the national leaders.
• Nixon homered for the sixth time this season with an opposite-field solo blast in the top of the second inning.
• Perez finished the night 1-for-2 with a single, a walk and a run scored.
