Apr 24, 2025 | Baseball
SAN ANTONIO – The University of Memphis baseball team is set to begin a three-game American Athletic Conference series in San Antonio, Texas, at Roadrunner Field with conference leader UTSA on Friday night. First pitch for game one of the series is slated for 6 p.m.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. before Sunday's series finale at noon. All three games of the series can be streamed live on ESPN+. Jeff Brightwell will be on the call via audio stream at GoTigersGo.com and The Varsity Network powered by Learfield.
Roadrunner Field will play host to the second all-time series between the two programs. In the inaugural meeting last season, the Roadrunners took the series with a 7-5 win over the Tigers in the series rubber match.
Memphis (16-24, 4-11 AAC) earned a 13-2 run-rule win over Rice last Saturday in the series finale with the Owls. On Tuesday night, the Tigers slugged four home runs but fell 8-6 to Arkansas State in Memphis. Shane Cox homered for the third-consecutive game on Tuesday night vs. A-State and has now more than doubled his previous career high home-run total with seven big flies this season.
UTSA (30-10, 12-3 AAC) will enter the weekend after taking two-of-three games vs. Tulane at Roadrunner Field last weekend. UTSA won 13-5 Thursday night before dropping a two-run game to the Green Wave on Friday. The Roadrunners responded with a 25-run explosion in Saturday's finale to win 25-7 in seven innings and take the series.
The Tigers will roll out the weekend rotation of RHP Seth Garner (2-5, 4.20 ERA) on Friday night, followed by LHP David Case (1-5, 5.74 ERA) and LHP Isaac Lucas (3-0, 6.07 ERA) in Sunday's finale. The Roadrunners will counter with RHP Zach Royse (5-4, 5.21 ERA), RHP Braylon Owens (5-2, 5.12 ERA) and LHP Conor Myles (4-1, 4.43 ERA).
Entering the week, Tiger catcher Jonah Sutton was T-No. 11 nationally in runners thrown out from behind the plate (15) and is now 15-of-32 (47%) from behind the dish. As a team, Memphis has thrown out 44 percent of runners stealing on the season (20-of-45) as Justin Fogel is 4-for-10 on the year and freshman Jack Pitts is 1-for-3.
After ranking 12th nationally with 54 double plays turned a season ago, the Tigers have turned 37 through the season's first 40 games and rank No. 9 nationally in that category.
The Memphis pitching staff has been another highlight this season, combining for a 4.87 ERA (343.2 IP) to rank fourth in The American and 66th nationally. The Tiger bullpen has accounted for 181.2 of those innings and has given up 89 earned runs for a bullpen ERA of 4.41.
The Roadrunners rank seventh nationally with a .325 batting average, No. 8 in on-base percentage (.437), No. 13 in doubles (94) and are top 20 in the nation in scoring, averaging 8.8 runs per game. UTSA is led offensively by Preseason AAC Player of the Year, Mason Lytle (.393 AVG. / 17 2B / 6 HR / 47 RBI).
