Tigers Beat UAPB, Head into AAC Play on a High Note
Mar 28, 2023 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 9-5, Tuesday night at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field. The Tigers used nine different pitchers in the win and Anthony Hansen ended a double shy of the cycle.
With the win, Memphis improves to 15-11 on the season. The Golden Lions dropped to 8-16 on the year with the loss.
"This was an opportunity going into the weekend where we wanted to give as many guys a competitive inning as we could because we know we'll have to use those guys this weekend," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "Hansen ended a double away from the cycle and I think he could have hit a groundball to the shortstop and probably wouldn't have quit running there at the end. He was locked in all night… hopefully he can carry that into the weekend."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Logan Kohler's two-run double in the bottom of the first put the Tigers in front early, driving in Hansen and Jake Curtis.
• UAPB got a run in the second, but Memphis answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame when Hansen scored on a wild pitch after he tripled to make it a 3-1 game.
• In the fourth, it was Hansen again who added on to the Tiger lead. He deposited a 3-1 pitch over the right-field wall that drove in Kerry Herndon-Brown and grew the Memphis lead to 5-1.
• UAPB scratched back for a pair of runs in the fifth, but the Tigers threw up a four spot in their half of the sixth. All with two outs in the inning, the Tigers loaded the bases. Brayland Skinner scored the first run of the frame on a wild pitch, and then Kohler drove in his third, fourth and fifth runs of the game on a three-run, no-doubt homerun to right field to make the score 9-3.
• The Golden Lions were able to add a pair of runs in the seventh, but that is all they would get, making the final 9-5, Tigers.
NOTABLES
• Hansen ended the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored – and a double shy of the cycle. He smashed his sixth homerun of the season and has homered in back-to-back games for the second time this season.
• Kohler filled up the stat sheet as well, going 2-for-4 with a homerun, a double and five RBI, also scoring a run.
• The Tigers used nine pitchers in the game for one inning each. Glenn Green III made his first collegiate start and earned the win to move to 3-0 on the season.
• Curtis started at second base and was on base four times, going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and runs scored and was also hit by a pitch. He moved from second base to the pitcher's mound in the ninth inning and finished the game without allowing a hit, striking out a pair.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers hit the road and begin American Athletic Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Tulane (6-18).
