Tigers Drop AAC Opener at Tulane
Mar 31, 2023 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Memphis baseball team fell to Tulane, 5-2, on Friday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium in its American Athletic Conference opener. With the setback, Memphis moves to 15-12 on the season.
"Rough way to start conference play," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "We have to continue to coach them up and teach these guys how to win. They don't know how to win and it's up to us to put them in a position to do so. We'll come out tomorrow, see what we can do, try to tie this thing up and put ourselves in a position to win a series on Sunday."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Tigers struck first with a run in the top of the second inning. Jake Curtis reached on an error by the shortstop and proceeded to steal third base and score on a passed ball.
• Tulane answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a solo homerun and a wild pitch to take a 2-1 lead.
• The Green Wave added a run in the fourth and the fifth inning to extend its lead to 4-1.
• In the top of the seventh inning, Jonah Sutton reached on an error by the shortstop before Anthony Hansen lined a single through the right side to cut into the Tulane lead and make it a 4-2 game. Logan Kohler then doubled off the left-field wall, just missing a homerun, and Hansen was thrown out at home to end the inning.
• The Green Wave got that run back in the bottom half of the seventh on an RBI single to left field and extended its lead to three runs once again, and 5-3 proved to be final.
NOTABLES
• Starting pitcher David Warren went 6.1 innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out five, but was tagged with the loss to move to 2-2 on the year.
• Hansen was 2-for-5 from the lead-off spot and drove in a run. He has hit safely in 22-of-25 games played this season.
• Kohler ended the night 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, both hitting the wall on the fly for near homeruns.
• Braden Webb got the start in center field and finished the game 1-for-3 with a double.
• In his return home, New Orleans native Will Spears started at shortstop and was 1-for-3 with a double.
• Curtis and Jonah Sutton each scored a run.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers are back at Greer Field tomorrow for game two of the series with Tulane at 6 p.m.
