Memphis Drops Series-Opener to Oral Roberts
Mar 24, 2023 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team fell to Oral Roberts, 11-1, on Friday at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field in game one of a three-game series. With the setback, Memphis fell to 13-10 on the season and had a three-game winning streak snapped. The Golden Eagles improved to 15-8 on the season with the win and have won five in a row.
"We played against a good ball club today and we didn't play very well," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "I told our guys ahead of time that if we didn't play well, that we were at risk of that happening. We're kind of Jekyll and Hyde a little bit as a club. We have to keep coaching them up and find some consistency. We'll look to come out tomorrow and put ourselves in a position to tie it up and hopefully get ourselves in position to win the series on Sunday."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• ORU got on the board early when shortstop Mac McCroskey got a ball up into the jet stream on the seventh pitch of the game from Tiger starter David Warren that carried out over the left-center field wall for a solo shot.
• In the second inning, two free passes and a single loaded the bases for the Golden Eagles. Blaze Brothers lined one over the left-center field wall for a grand slam to unload the bases and put ORU up 5-0. An RBI double by Jonah Cox with one out made it 6-0.
• Warren settled in after the second inning and posted three zeroes in the ORU run column before being pulled after 5.1 innings.
• ORU added a pair of runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to take an 11-0 lead.
• The Tigers got on the board in the eighth inning. Shane Cox drew a walk to lead off the inning, Will Spears singled through the left side and Cade Hennemann grounded out to third, driving in Cox.
NOTABLES
• ORU was 8-for-18 (.444) with runners on base, the Tigers were 1-for-8 (.125).
• Anthony Hansen went 1-for-2 and has hit safely in 19-of-21 games this season.
• Cox finished 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.
• Spears came off the bench to play shortstop in the eighth inning and assisted on a 4-6-3 double play to end inning before getting a hit in the bottom half of the frame in his only at-bat of the day.
• Hennemann notched his second RBI of the season in just four at-bats.
• Warren took the loss for the Tigers and moved to 2-1 on the year.
