Tigers Bounce Back, Take Game Two from ORU
Mar 25, 2023 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team bounced back from yesterday's loss, defeating Oral Roberts, 7-5, on Saturday at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field in game two of a three-game series.
With the win, Memphis improves to 14-10 on the season. The Golden Eagles fell to 15-9 on the season with the loss and had a five-game winning streak snapped.
"Today, my challenge to the team was: no matter what happens, win, lose or draw, come out and be competitive. If they're going to get a win, make them earn it," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "Austin [Baskin] was locked in all day. Being able to extend that lead in the seventh was awesome. [To get a series win tomorrow] we'll need to come out, be competitive and throw strikes, have quality at-bats and play good defense."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• A two-out single by Brennan DuBose that scored Austin Baskin got the Tigers on the board in the second inning.
• Baskin singled in the second inning to drive in Brayland Skinner and make the Tigers' lead 2-0.
• Tiger starter Dalton Fowler didn't allow a hit until Holden Breeze tucked a solo homerun just inside the right-field foul pole to lead off the fifth inning.
• The Tigers added a pair of runs in the sixth inning on solo homeruns by Jake Curtis and Austin Baskin to go Memphis' lead to 4-1.
• A two-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning by ORU's Drew Stahl cut the Tiger lead to 4-3.
• The Tigers responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. A bases-loaded walk by Anthony Hansen forced in the first Memphis run before Baskin delivered his fourth hit of the day to drive in Curtis and Skinner and extend the lead to 7-3.
• The Golden Eagles scratched across a pair of runs in the eighth on a sac-fly and a wild pitch, but closer Dalton Kendrick slammed the door in the ninth to clinch the Tiger win.
NOTABLES
• Fowler went seven innings – his longest start of the season – racking up 11 strikeouts and allowing just three hits.
• Baskin was dialed in at the plate all afternoon, going 4-for-4 with a homerun, four RBI and two runs scored. The four-hit day marked Baskin's 11th multi-hit game in 23 starts this season.
• DuBose ended the day 2-for-3 with an RBI to mark his second-straight start with multiple base hits.
• Braden Webb notched a pair of hits from the nine spot in the lineup and scored a run.
• Curtis ended the game 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored, and slugged his second homerun of the season and second in the last three games.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers are back at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field tomorrow for the rubber match and series finale with Oral Roberts. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Freshman Seth Garner (1-2, 4.56 ERA) will make his sixth start of the year, and the Golden Eagles will counter with righty Brooks Fowler (2-1, 2.49 ERA).
