Goodman posts 4-for-5 outing
STORRS, Conn. – A balanced day helped Memphis even its weekend series behind a 7-1 victory at UConn on Saturday at J.O. Christian Field.
Offensively, the Tigers (17-15, 4-4) erupted for five runs in the first three innings, and six scoreless frames on the mound forced a rubber game on Sunday. The series finale is slated for 10 a.m. (CT).
Hunter Goodman enjoyed a 4-for-5 day with three RBI and three runs scored. The freshman also added his fifth home run of the year.
Payton Marshall, Nick Vaage and Cale Hennemann added multiple hit efforts with two hits apiece. Marshall and Hennemann each also posted an RBI.
On the mound, Alex Hicks improved his season record to 3-2 after he scattered five hits across seven innings and struck out five. The senior threw six scoreless frames before allowing a run in the seventh inning. In relief, redshirt freshman Bailey Wimberley retired six of the seven batters he faced while striking out three to close the game.
The Tigers struck for three runs in the top of the first inning. Ben Brooks led off the frame with a single and Colton Neel reached on a fielder's choice. Goodman and Marshall followed with back-to-back RBI singles, and an RBI from Kyle Ouellette built a 3-0 lead for the Tigers.
UConn (22-13, 5-5) threatened with the bases loaded in the first inning but were kept off the board. Hicks then took command over the next five frames, retiring 14 of the 17 batters he faced.
Memphis added its fourth run of the day when Hennemann drove in Vaage in the second, and an Alec Trela sacrifice fly in the third pushed the lead to 5-0.
Goodman capped the Tigers' scoring in the seventh inning with a two-run home run to left for a 7-0 advantage.
