Tigers fall in rubber game at UConn
Apr 14, 2019 | Baseball
STORRS, Conn. – A late offensive push fell short as Memphis fell 4-2 in the series finale at UConn on Sunday afternoon.
Sunday's game began as a pitcher's duel, as neither side generated much offense through the first five innings. After UConn plated the day's first two runs in the fifth, Memphis tied the contest in the top of the eighth inning. But the Huskies sealed their series win with two more runs in the bottom of the frame.
Freshman Hunter Goodman turned in another two-hit effort, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Seniors Colton Neel and Payton Marshall each scored a run, while junior Nick Vaage posted the team's lone RBI of the day. Goodman finished the weekend hitting at a .538 clip (7-for-13) with four RBI and a home run.
On the mound, starter Chris Durham did not factor into the decision despite another quality start. The junior surrendered just two runs on four hits across six innings while striking out three. Durham had retired 15 of the first 17 batters he faced before running into trouble in the sixth inning.
The Huskies broke through for a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to gain the day's first edge.
In the seventh, it was the defensive side of the diamond that began to turn the momentum for the Tigers. With two on and nobody out for the Huskies, a ground ball to Cale Hennemann at third base started a 5-4-3 triple play to end the threat. The triple play was the first by a Memphis team since Feb. 23, 1997 against Baylor.
Memphis used the advantage to tie the game in the following frame. With runners at the corners, Nick Vaage singled to plate the Tigers' first run of the day, and a wild pitch scored Marshall to even the game at 2-2.
UConn erased the momentum in the home half of the eighth as a two-out, 2-RBI single set the final.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday with a midweek tilt at Ole Miss. First pitch from Swayze Field is set for 6:30 p.m.
