Tigers drop 5-2 decision at No. 11 Ole Miss
Apr 16, 2019 | Baseball
OXFORD, Miss. – A low offensive evening fell the way of Ole Miss on Tuesday night, as the Rebels took a 5-2 contest against Memphis at Swayze Field.
Despite holding the Rebels to their second-lowest hit total of the season, Memphis issued 10 walks and committed two errors in the field. Ole Miss posted just three hits on the evening, all coming in the same inning, while three of the five runs that scored reached via a walk or error.
Offensively, the Tigers were limited to four hits throughout the game. Hunter Goodman continued his offensive surge with his sixth home run of the season, all in the last 11 games. Ben Brooks collected his sixth double of the season and drove in a run.
The Rebels struck for four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a scoreless game. An error and double plated the game's first run, and a pair of bunt singles around a fielder's choice yielded three more runs.
The Tigers responded with a run in each the fifth and sixth innings. After Cale Hennemann reached base via a hit-by-pitch, Brooks' extra base hit put Memphis on the board.
Goodman then sent his sixth homer of the year off the batter's eye in straight away centerfield to trim to deficit to 4-2 in the sixth.
That would be as close as the Tigers would strike, however, as Ole Miss used an insurance run in the seventh to set the 5-2 final.
The Tigers will return to Memphis and jumpstart a five-game home stand with a three-game conference series against Tulane on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Thursday's first pitch from FedExPark is slated for 6 p.m.
