Women’s Tennis Heads to Murfreesboro to Face MTSU, VCU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's tennis team heads to Middle Tennessee this weekend for a pair of matches against the Blue Raiders and VCU at the Adams Tennis Complex.
Memphis squares off with the Blue Raiders Friday at 2 p.m., before a Saturday date with VCU at 11 a.m.
About Memphis (8-5)
The Lady Tigers earned a fifth consecutive victory in the their American Athletic Conference opener last Friday, 4-2, at Houston, before falling to No. 38 Rice Saturday.
Memphis received singles wins from No. 2 Hanna Sohn, No. 5 Katherine Cao and No. 6 Josephine Cao against the Cougars while also taking the doubles point with victories from the teams of Katherine Cao and Anki Wind as well as Sohn and Marta Morga.
Five Memphis players enter the weekend with at least 10 singles victories on the season. Katherine Cao's 17-6 mark leads the Tigers, including a 9-2 record in dual matches. Eight of her dual-match singles wins have come from the No. 5 position in the lineup. Wind and Sohn have 16 and 15 singles wins, respectively. Wind is 3-0 at No. 2 and Sohn is 5-4 also in the second flight.
Josephine Cao and Sohn have been the Tigers' top doubles pair, going 7-1, including 3-1 in dual-match play from the second position.
About Middle Tennessee (6-9)
Middle Tennessee enters the weekend having won two of its last three matches. The Blue Raiders swept San Francisco on the road March 5 and topped BYU, 4-3, March 9 sandwiched by a 4-2 loss to Fresno State on March 8.
Middle Tennessee lost its only other match against an American team this season, falling at Tulsa, 6-1 on Feb. 12. The Golden Hurricane was receiving votes in the ITA poll at the time.
The Blue Raiders are coached by Charlie Ramsay, a 2010 Memphis alumnus, who is in his second season after leading Middle Tennessee to a 14-8-1 mark last year. Ramsay, who captained the Tigers as a senior, is assisted by Memphis women's tennis great Courtney Collins-Guentner. She was the first Memphis player to advance to the NCAA championships and just the second to be nationally ranked in singles. She earned All-Conference USA singles honors four consecutive seasons at Memphis before graduating in 2013 second in school history with 95 singles wins.
About VCU (10-5)
The Rams are 10-5 on the season, but have lost their last three matches coming into play this weekend. VCU has wins over Penn State, Marshall and FAU, Saint Louis, Temple and ECU, among others.
Janina Braun leads the Rams with a 12-3 mark in the dual matches, with seven wins coming at No. 1 singles. Anna Rasmussen, has won six times in the No. 2 position.
