Memphis wins sixth in last seven matches
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's tennis team got back in the win column Friday, claiming a 4-2 victory at Middle Tennessee to open a two-match weekend at the Adams Tennis Center.
The victory is the Lady Tigers' sixth in their last seven matches as Memphis improved to 9-5 on the season. The loss for MTSU drops it to 6-10 on the year.
"Today was a great day for the team," said Memphis head coach Hayden Perez. "It was a hard-fought match with MTSU. They played very hard and I give them credit for playing well and pushing us to the limit. This team is really starting to compete well and be consistent with the energy they bring to the matches. [Assistant coaches] Alex [Lane], Ryan [Haymond] and I couldn't be more proud of this team right now."
Memphis got going early as Anki Wind and Katherine Cao topped Middle Tennessee's Costanza Magazzini and Lidia Burrows, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. The Lady Tigers closed out the doubles point as Gabrielle Paul and Josephine Cao beat Sarah Sediri and Luisa Zirilli, 7-5, on court one to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Marta Morga then dispatched Zirilli, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 to open singles play and double the Memphis lead, before Burrows got the Blue Raiders on the scoreboard.
Josephine Cao took a three-set decision at six to restore a two-point margin, 3-1, but Magazzini won her flight on court three to tighten things once again.
Wind, though, shook off a tough first set to rebound for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win on court one to seal the match for Memphis. She improved to 17-9 overall in singles this season, earning her third victory from the No. 1 spot in dual play.
Memphis will close the weekend with an 11 a.m., match Saturday against VCU.
