Memphis set school record by drawing 11 walks in the loss
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Memphis Tigers drew a school-record 11 walks and scored in four of seven innings; however, a two-run walk-off home run by East Carolina right fielder Ciara Ervin gave the hosts a 7-6 win in the second game of a three-game series between the teams.
Memphis and East Carolina meet in the winner-take-all American Athletic Conference series finale on Sunday morning with a 10 a.m. first pitch at the ECU Softball Stadium.
Brooke Lee had a team-high two hits, going 2-for-4 at the plate, while also driving in a team-best two runs. Memphis' remaining five hits came from five different batters – Brittany Seale, Lindsey Stickrod, Regan Hadley, Hannah Harrell, and Tyler Johnson. Lindsay Crowdus scored a team-high two runs, while Jessie Lamb, Breana Valenzuela, Hadley, Lee, and Johnson each scored once.
After a 1-0 Tiger win an evening earlier, East Carolina (19-23, 1-7 AAC) struck quickly in the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning. The win would give Memphis its third straight AAC series win.
The Tigers drew 11 walks over the seven innings, breaking the previous school record of 10 set on February 28, 2015 against Texas Tech and on March 27, 2011 against UTEP.
Memphis (19-20, 3-2 AAC) answered back in the top of the second when Crowdus opened the inning with a walk, stole second base and scored in a Lee double to left field, knotting the game at one run apiece.
A leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the second pushed the Pirates back ahead 2-1, but the Tigers erupted for three runs in the top of the third inning to re-take the advantage. Seale opened the frame with a walk, and was lifted for pinch-runner Valenzuela. Valenzuela was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and to third when Crowdus reached base on a fielding error.
Crowdus followed by stealing second base, before Lee singled through the right-side, scoring Valenzuela. As Crowdus rounded third base and headed towards home, she got caught in a run-down, and a throw from the Pirate third baseman sailed over the catcher's head allowing Crowdus to score. During the run-down, Lee was able to advance to third base, and scored a batter later when Harrell singled into center field, scoring Lee, and putting the Tigers ahead 5-2.
East Carolina answered in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs, to re-take the lead at 6-4.
In the top of the fifth inning Memphis re-took the lead when Tyler Johnson singled home Regan Hadley. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases, Hadley scored on a wild pitch, knotting the score at six runs apiece.
Neither team would score for the next inning and a half, before Memphis snapped the scoreless streak in the top of the seventh inning when Seale singled home Lamb, who had reached on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Series-opener winner Molly Smith came into the game in a relief effort in a save situation in the seventh inning, and quickly got the first two batters to fly out and strike out. A walk was followed by a two-run home run to center field, giving the Pirates the win and snapping their nine-game losing skid.
