Tyler Johnson drives in two runs in the Tiger series win
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Memphis Tigers scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings, and held on despite two solo home runs over the final two innings, picking up a 4-2 win over the East Carolina Pirates, and an American Athletic Conference series win – Memphis' fourth straight AAC series victory.
Memphis made the most of its four hits in the game, as Jessie Lamb, Brittany Seale, Hannah Harrell, and Tyler Johnson each had a hit, while Johnson drove in two runs, one each in the third and fourth innings. The team's four runs came from four different players – comprising of the bottom four batters in the teams' lineup – Brooke Lee, Regan Hadley, Harrell, and Johnson.
Smith improved to 8-9 on the season in the circle, striking out seven and walking none. She scattered eight hits and gave up two runs.
The series win was Memphis' second this season after beating UConn twice in a best-of-three series, and the team won its final two series of the 2015 AAC series 2-1 over Houston and 2-1 over USF.
Memphis (20-20, 4-2 AAC) was sat down in order in both the first and second innings of the game.
At the same time, East Carolina (19-24, 1-8 AAC) threatened in the first innings with two hits, but none would come around to score.
In the top of the third inning the Tigers got its offense moving with a single from Harrell, which was followed by a double from Johnson to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. A ground out moved Johnson to third, and then scored when Lamb singled to right field.
After an inning in which ECU recorded just one hit, Memphis put up two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Brooke Lee drew a one-out walk, before she was safe on a putout attempt at second base a batter later. Lee came around to score on a throwing error by the Pirate pitcher. Johnson followed with an RBI groundout that scored Harrell, giving Memphis a 4-0 lead through four innings.
After a scoreless fifth inning, East Carolina added a run in both the sixth and seventh innings on solo home runs, but the hosts could not squeeze any more runs across in the 4-2 Tiger win.
Memphis returns to action on Tuesday, April 12, when they host Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. at Tiger Softball Complex.
