Hannah Harrell sets single-season steals record in pair of wins
In the first game, Lindsay Crowdus tied the program record for doubles in a game with two, while the Tigers stole eight bases, which ties their own single-game record set earlier this season against Buffalo (March 11).
Harrell and teammate Kyler Trosclair battled back and forth for the stolen base record, as Harrell tied the record three times, and twice she was tied by Trosclair over the two games.
Harrell went 5-for-6 on the day with four runs scored and four RBI's, while Lindsey Stickrod was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while also drawing two walks. Three other players: Jessie Lamb (2-for-3), Crowdus (4-for-7), and Trosclair (2-for-4) each had hits in at least half of their at-bats in the game.
Memphis (22-20) will look to carry its momentum from the game and the previous weekend into its home three-game series with nationally ranked USF. The Tigers host the Bulls on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the Memphis Softball Complex.
In the opener the Tigers struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning. Crowdus led off with one of her two doubles, advancing to third base on the play on an errant throw by the Lion left fielder. Harrell hit an infield single to put runners on the corners, before stealing second base, her 20th steal of the year.
Brittany Seale and Lindsey Stickrod followed with walks, Seale's loading the bases and Stickrod's driving home Crowdus. A pop-up put the first out on the board, before Regan Hadley grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Harrell and giving the hosts a 2-0 lead.
After a three-run top of the second inning for Arkansas-Pine Bluff (12-30) gave the visitors a 3-2 lead, Memphis answered back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jessie Lamb opened the inning with a single and stole second base, before Trosclair reached on a dropped fly ball from the Lion right fielder. Trosclair then stole second base, and the pair scored on Crowdus' second double in as many innings.
Crowdus stole third base, before scoring when an errant run-down throw hit the junior outfielder, allowing her tow score. Harrell and Seale grounded out and popped out, respectively. With two outs, Stickrod hit her fifth home run of the season, a line-drive over the wall in left field, giving Memphis a 6-3 lead.
Tyler Johnson led off the third inning with a solo home run, as the Tigers batted around in the inning. Lamb followed with a bunt single, and stole second base, and advanced to third when Trosclair reached on a bunt single. As UAPB was fielding the Trosclair bunt, the sophomore shortstop saw second base was unoccupied, and took off for the open base, picking up her second steal of the game, and a school-record-tying 20th of the year.
A groundout by Crowdus kept both runners in scoring position, before a single up the middle from Harrell scored the pair. Seale followed by reaching on a fielding error, and Stickrod walked to load the bases. The three runners advanced a base, including Harrell scoring, before Brooke Lee singled home pinch-runner Breana Valenzuela for the game's final run.
Relief pitcher Molly Smith was steady throughout, as she allowed just one baserunner in her four innings of relief, including retiring the final 11 batters she faced in the contest.
Crowdus was 3-for-4 in the opener with two runs scored and two driven in. Lamb went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored, as Harrell was 2-for-3 with two runs scored while driving in a pair. Stickrod drew two walks and officially went 1-for-1 at the plate with two RBI's as Trosclair scored twice while going 1-for-2 at the plate. In all, seven of Memphis' nine position starters had hits in the game.
Smith evened her record at 9-9 on the season as she struck out five over four innings in relief without giving up a hit or a walk.
In the nightcap, starting pitcher Christian Novak was stellar, giving up just two hits while striking out eight and recording the second shutout of her career.
In the top of the first inning, it was Lee who opened the scoring, as she hit a three-run home run, scoring herself, Harrell, and Stickrod.
An inning later, the first four batters all reached on hits, scoring with RBI singles from Harrell (scoring Trosclair) and Stickrod (scoring Crowdus). Lee hit a soft ground ball to the Arkansas-Pine Bluff first baseman, who as she was placing the tag on Lee, saw the ball fall out of her glove, which sent Harrell across the plate. The Lion second baseman grabbed the ball and threw it to third base to try to tag out an advancing Stickrod; however, the third baseman missed the catch, and the ball rolled up the third base fence line, allowing Stickrod to score, and putting the Tigers ahead 7-0.
In the third Lamb drew an inning-opening walk, stole second base, and scored on a single up the middle from Harrell, giving Memphis its eight-run advantage, before cruising the rest of the way in the run-rule win.
Harrell was a perfect 3-for-3 in the nightcap, while Stickrod was 2-for-3. Each of the two scored twice, while Lee drove in a team-best three runs, with Harrell chasing home two in the game.
