NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Memphis softball team fell 7-0 in game one of a doubleheader to Belmont at E.S. Rose Park.
The Bruins (12-16) scored three runs in the third and fourth innings and a seventh run in the fifth to earn the shutout.
Junior first baseman Kelly Braman and junior RHP Ellen Robertsled Memphis (14-26) with two hits each. The Tigers were outhit by the Bruins, 9-7, and left eight runners on base.
Roberts (7-17) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Brittanie Albright (3-6) picked up the victory for Belmont, allowing no runs on six hits in five innings of work.
Memphis attempted to take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Senior outfielder Lelani Bernardinowas hit by the pitch to lead off the inning. With the hit by pitch, she became the school's all-time career leader in the category with 25. Bernardino then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, but was thrown out at the plate on a steal attempt following a strikeout to end the inning.
Belmont scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead. Back-to-back two-out doubles by Mia Vierra and Kirbie Ferrell drove in the first run. Ferrell then came around to score on a RBI single to right by Ashley Hammer. Amanda Criscione scored from first on the play on a throwing error by the shortstop.
The Bruins scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth on four hits and an error to take a 6-0 lead. Jessica Wilson reached base on a one-out error and scored on back-to-back singles by Becca Gift and Jordan Daly. RBI two-out singles by Criscione and Ferrell drove in the other two runs.
Gift drove in the final run for Belmont with a two-out double in the fifth inning to score Kat Hollingsworth from second.
Ferrell led the Bruins offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Vierra scored two runs, while Gift went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
