MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team travels down to Birmingham for a three-game set against the UAB Blazers, with game one set for Thursday.
Game times will be 5:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, respectively.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis (11-25, 2-10 American) looks to reignite its offense after being shut out at home against Ole Miss on Tuesday. Most recently in American Conference play, Memphis took one game of three against Tulsa.
Ariel Davis, Faith Brown and Jasmine Mack have formed a powerful stretch in the middle of Memphis' lineup entering the final 20 games of the regular season. Davis is Memphis' sole leader or tied for the top mark in average (.386), hits (39), runs (25), doubles (six), triples (two), home runs (six), RBI (20) and walks (13). Brown (.345 AVG), an American Conference weekly honorable mention, has been Memphis' top hitter in conference play with team-bests in hits (14), doubles (two), home runs (two), RBI (seven) and stolen bases (three), while being tied with Davis in total RBI with 20. Mack has jumped into a regular role as Memphis' catcher, sitting at 19 RBI with five doubles, two triples and four home runs on the season.
Memphis featured five arms against Ole Miss, including the return of Taniyah Brown, who had not pitched in over a month. Avery Stutts leads the staff with 71 innings pitched and 30 strikeouts, with her innings total being 24 more than the second-highest mark on the team. Fellow freshman, Taylor Caton trails close behind with 29 strikeouts over 40.1 innings of work. Memphis expects to continue usage of multiple arms in games as Tigers pitchers have made 95 appearances compared to their opponents only having 74 on the season.
SCOUTING THE BLAZERS
Ole Miss (16-21, 3-9 American) is riding a four-game winning streak after a series sweep of East Carolina and a 7-3 win over Samford on Tuesday.
At the plate, UAB posts similar numbers to Memphis in terms of batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. Ashlyn Shirah and Hannah Dorsett lead as the only two hitting above .300, with Shirah's 24 RBI being a team high. The pair also combine for 15 of UAB's 16 stolen bases on the season. Their leader in OPS is freshman Charlee Bennett, whose 25 walks are tied for the 47th-most in the NCAA.
Three arms feature mainly for the Blazers in Caitlin Russell, Olivia Cummings and Tait Davidson. Cummings, a recent honorable mention in the American's weekly awards, has emerged as the staff's leader with a 3.20 ERA over 76.2 innings. Her 3.33 strikeout-to-walk ratio is the best in the conference and ranks 64th nationally, while her 0.82 walks per seven innings is the third-lowest in the country.
UAB's defense has played a major factor throughout the season, with a top-50 fielding percentage. Left-handed catcher Abbi Perkins, a Jacksonville State transfer, has caught nine would-be base stealers, the top mark in the American and the 25th-most in the NCAA this season.
SERIES HISTORY VS. UAB
Memphis trails 10-23 in the all-time series with the Blazers and haven't won in Birmingham since the 2010 season.
Last season, the Tigers took one game against UAB before knocking off the Blazers in the opening round of the American Conference Championships in Tampa, Florida. In that postseason contest, Kennedy Semien and Shelby Durbin each went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, while Kayla Clement logged an RBI.
