Memphis Softball Takes Game One From Southern Miss, 4-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Memphis softball team took game one of its Saturday doubleheader with Southern Miss, improving the Tigers to 33-11 (13-7 in Conference USA) on the season. Southern Miss falls to 17-35 (4-18 C-USA).
The game was quiet through the first three innings, with neither team able to muster much offense. Memphis loaded the bases with two outs in the first but couldn't capitalize.
The Tigers broke through with three runs in the fourth. Nikki Moreno drove in Kamri Chester with a bloop single to left for the game's first run, and Moreno's seventh RBI of 2011.
Three batters later, Maddie McKinley drove in two with a single up the middle, her 28th and 29th runners knocked in during the 2011 campaign to stake Memphis to a 3-0 lead.
Southern Miss would get one back in the bottom of the frame. After loading the bases, Carly Hummel plunked Chanell Thurman to score Taylor Brown. But Hummel struck out the next two batters to minimize the damage.
Moreno put another run on the board for Memphis in the top of the sixth, hitting a solo home run that bounced off the top of the left field wall and went over for her second home run of the season.
Hummel (19-5) picked up her 19th victory of the campaign, throwing a complete game while scattering three hits and one run. The sophomore from Bakersfield, Calif., struck out seven on the day.
The Tigers picked up their 10th road win of 2011, giving them double-digit wins at home, on the road and at neutral sites during the campaign.
Although Heather Mott's 14-game hitting streak came to an end, her slack was more than picked up by Moreno, who finished 3-for-3 with a homer and two runs knocked in. Mott's consecutive streak of reaching base did improve to 20-straight games after reaching to lead off the game on an error.
The second game will get underway at roughly 3:20 p.m. (CT).
