Hummel Sets Memphis Strikeout Record in 1-0 Loss to No. 22 Texas A&M

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Carly Hummel set a new Memphis record with 19 strikeouts against No. 22 Texas A&M, but the Aggies score an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth to win 1-0 on Sunday in the Bulldog Classic.

Hummel's previous high and school record was 15 strikeouts during her freshman season, which she accomplished against Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State. The sophomore bested the mark with 16 K's through the first seven innings and struck out a stretch of eight in a row during the fourth through sixth inning. Southern Miss' Courtney Blades holds the Conference USA record for strikeouts with 21 against LSU in 2000.

Texas A&M won the game in the bottom of the ninth on a one-out single to left by Meagan May to left field that scored Emily Albus from second. Albus started the inning at second with the International Tiebreaker rule in effect. May was the only Aggie starter in the game not to strike out.

Hummel allowed just two hits in the game and had a stretch of retiring 13-straight beginning with a leadoff walk in the fourth and ending with a one-out walk in the eight. Natalie Villarreal was the only other Aggie to record a hit, an infield bloop single in front of short in the third inning.

The loss is the first for Hummel who falls to 8-1 on the season. The Bakersfield, Calif., native walked four and lowered her ERA to 0.79. The Tigers fall to 12-4 on the season, while Texas A&M improves to 14-5.

Memphis struggled offensively, finishing with two hits off Texas A&M RHP Lindsey Sisk. Sisk (6-2) allowed no runs on two hits with three walks and struck out seven. Alyssa Palmieri hit a two-out single in the second and Lelani Bernardino hit a one-out single to right in the third, before Sisk held the Tigers' without a hit the remainder of the game. Memphis left seven runners on base, including the bases loaded in the eighth inning.

Morgan Mosby started the eighth on second and Palmieri drew a leadoff walk. Amber Lindahl then moved the runners into scoring position with one out on a sacrifice bunt. A two-out walk to Bernardino loaded the bases, but pinch hitter Nikki Moreno grounded into a fielder's choice at short to end the inning.

Memphis then had a chance to score in the ninth with Ijiah Hargrove at third base with one out following a leadoff sac bunt by Heather Mott. Kailey Kassner hit a high fly ball to left, but the wind blew the ball back toward the infield causing Hargrove to hold up at third.

The Tigers will next play Mississippi Valley State in the final game of the tournament hosted by Mississippi State at around 2 p.m. today. Memphis had the first two games in the tournament against Mississippi State rained out.
