ATLANTA, Ga. - Heather Mott's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning would be all Carly Hummel would need as the University of Memphis softball team shutout Lipscomb 1-0 on Sunday at the Panther Invitational.
Memphis improves to 6-2 on the season with the win while Lipscomb falls to 2-6. The Tigers have now knocked off three teams that appeared in the NCAA Regional's last year with wins over No. 22/24 Ohio State, Kentucky and Lipscomb. The 6-2 start is the best record through eight games in the six-year history of the program.
Lipscomb pitcher Whittney Kihnl pitched five and two-thirds innings without allowing a Memphis hit, but Mott stepped up to the plate and drove a 2-0 pitch deep to left field for a home run and gave Memphis the 1-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. It was Mott's 17th career home run and she needs three more home runs to tied for second place in school history.
After throwing a 1-0 shutout in Saturday's victory over Appalachian State, Hummel returned to the circle and threw another shutout allowing only two hits and she walked one. Hummel struck out six and improves to 5-0 on the season with a 0.74 ERA in 37.2 innings pitched.
Kihnl suffered the loss in the game, throwing six innings and allowed two hits and one run. Kihnl, a 2010 NFCA Third-Team All-American, struck out 11 and falls to 2-4 on the season.
The Tigers will play in the championship game of the tournament at 2:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday. The opponent has not been determined at this time.
