Longball Powers Memphis to 10-8 Win over Marshall

Memphis (12-15; 3-2 C-USA) 003 052 000 - 10 15 0 Marshall (11-14; 2-3 C-USA) 004 000 022 - 8 13 0The Memphis offense got home runs from Rick Russell, Jacob Wilson and Chad Zurcher, and Ryan Fraser struck out nine in 7.2 innings to lead the Tigers to a 10-8 victory over Marshall in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Appalachian Power Park. The win improved Memphis to 12-15 overall and 3-2 in C-USA play. Marshall falls to 11-14, 2-3 in league play.
Fraser was strong in his third win of the year, scattering nine hits and walking a pair in a 134-pitch outing. He allowed six earned runs before handing the ball over to Chase Joiner with a 10-4 lead. Joiner gave up two runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.
Memphis got a two-run blast by Russell to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. The round-tripper was Russell's second of the year. Wilson fueled a five-run fifth and extended the Tigers' lead to 8-4 with his second career grand slam. Zurcher highlighted the top of the sixth with a two-run shot over the left centerfield wall.
Marshall's Kurt Lipton was a one-man show, lining a bases-loaded triple and scoring on an RBI-single by Chris Norton in a four-run third inning. He then cut the Memphis lead to 10-8 in the bottom of the ninth with a tape-measure two-run home run that landed outside of the Appalachian Power Park. Lipton went 2-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored to power the Herd's 13-hit attack.
The Tiger offense banged out 15 hits in the game. Wilson led the way with three hits and four RBI. Drew Martinez (2-for-5, three runs), Zurcher (2-for-5), Tyler Huelsing (2-for-5), Adam McClain (2-for-5) and Derrick Thomas (2-for-2, two runs) had two hits each. Zurcher and Russell added three RBI.
Memphis will go for the series win in game three. Junior lefthander Ryan Holland will take the mound for the Tigers.
