Senior Tyler Huelsing went 6-for-6 with eight RBI and a program-record tying three home runs to help Memphis clinch a series win via a 21-13 thrashing of Marshall in the series finale Saturday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park.
Huelsing led the Memphis offense that put up season-high numbers in it comeback win. The Tigers, who win their second-straight C-USA series, scored a season-high in runs (21), RBI (24), hits (24) and home runs (5). Memphis also got homers from Adam McClain and Jacob Wilson in the contest. Huelsing now has nine round-trippers this year--the highest total by a Memphis player since 2007. His eight RBI fell one shy of the Memphis record.
Memphis spotted Marshall five first-inning runs before McClain's towering homer to center highlighted a two-run second inning. Huelsing then connected for his first homer of the game--a solo shot that cleared the stadium gate--to make it 5-3.
Marshall scored a pair in the fifth to go up by four runs, but the Tigers came back with the next nine runs to surge ahead 12-7. Memphis scored three in the sixth and six more in the seventh. The Tigers batted around in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. A pair of two-run shots by Huelsing and Wilson powered the six-run seventh as Memphis took a controlling five-run cushion.
Marshall countered with four runs, but again Memphis answered. This time Schoenrock's crew strung together six hits and batted around for the third-straight inning en route to scoring five runs for a 17-11 advantage.
Huelsing's three-run home run over the right centerfield wall helped the Tigers finish strong with a four-run ninth inning.
The Munford, Tenn., native was not the only Tiger putting up productive numbers. Drew Martinez had four hits, four RBI and three runs scored. Chad Zurcher was 2-for-5 with three runs and three RBI. Wilson had three hits and three RBI. Phillip Chapman reached base six times, collected four hits and scored five runs. Derrick Thomas had two hits and scored twice.
Tiger starter Ryan Holland was roughed up early, giving up five runs in the first inning. But the southpaw settled down and held the Herd scoreless until the fifth inning to give the U of M offense an opportunity to mount its comeback. Heith Hatfield came on in relief of Holland and gave up four unearned runs on four hits in three innings to pick up the win. Marshall reliever Tyler Gatrell was tagged with the loss. He surrendered five runs (all earned) on six hits in just one inning.
Memphis' series win marked the first time since 2007 that the program has won a C-USA road series and it also represented the first time the Tigers have won multiple league series since 2007.
The U of M will now set its sights on midweek contests versus Austin Peay and UL-Monroe. The Tigers and Governors will battle it out at Pringles Park in Jackson, Tenn., on Tues., Apr. 6 at 6:30 p.m. Memphis will host former Tiger Corey Barton and UL-Monroe at FedExPark on Wed., Apr. 7. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
