Senior Tyler Huelsing went 4-for-6 with a career-high five RBI and junior Ryan Holland held Oakland to just three unearned runs in 5.1 innings as Memphis raced to a 16-6 win in Sunday's series finale at FedExPark. The win sealed the Tiger's first series victory of the year.
Holland continued his dominance on opposing hitters, scattering five hits, while striking out four. He held Oakland scoreless through five before giving up the three unearned tallies in the sixth. The southpaw from Knoxville, Tenn., has tossed 12 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
While Holland shut down the OU offense, the Memphis offense got on the board early and often in the series finale. Memphis tied a season-high with 17 hits in the contest. Behind Huelsing's four hits, Memphis got three hits each from Chad Zurcher and Rick Russell. Phillip Chapman and Adam McClain also had multiple hits in the game. Drew Martinez scored three times and drove in three.
Martinez got things started in the first with a leadoff walk and he came around to score the game's first run on a RBI-single by Huelsing.
McClain drew a leadoff walk and Trey Wiedman and Phillip Chapman trailed with singles to load the bases. Alan Mathis drew a run-scoring walk and Martinez shot a single up the middle to bring in two for a 4-0 advantage. Huelsing struck again, highlighting the seven-run second, with a towering grand slam off the side of the scoreboard in rightfield. Huelsing's first blast of the year and the first grand slam in FedExPark history made it 8-0.
Holland held Oakland scoreless through five, but fell victim to defensive miscues to give up three unearned runs in the sixth.
The Tigers answered with a run in the home half of the sixth inning when McClain scored on a balk by Golden Grizzlies reliever Jake Andersen to make it 10-3.
McClain ignited a run-scoring eighth inning with a leadoff double. He later scored on a single to left off the bat of Chapman. Chapman scored on a groundout by Martinez and the U of M took advantage of a wild pitch to cross a second run in the stanza. Zurcher belted a single to left to score Martinez to make it 14-3. Memphis benefited from an Oakland error for a 16-3 cushion. The 16 runs scored by Memphis represents a season-high this year.
Jonathan Jones, Ben Paullus pitched two scoreless frames. Michael Wills gave up three runs in the ninth inning for the 16-6 final.
The Tigers will wrap up its homestand of four games in four days on Mon., Mar. 8 when they host Portland. Originally scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch, the game has been moved to 12 p.m. at FedExPark to accommodate the Pilot's travel schedule.
