The Tigers (2-3) shut out Bethune-Cookman (0-5), 6-0, in the final game of the USF Wilson Invitational on Sunday.
Freshman Janelle Valle (1-0) earned her first collegiate victory with three scoreless inning in relief. Valle struck out two and allowed just one hit to close the shutout.
Freshman Kimber Bossom started the game for Memphis and pitched three scoreless innings with five strikeouts and four hits. Freshman Rayna McClinton then came in for two scoreless innings in relief, allowing no hits and striking out two. The Tigers struck out a combined nine batters in the game.
Memphis managed just three hits in regulation off Wildcats' starter Allison Garcia (0-3). But in the extra frame the Tiger bats came alive with four hits and six runs. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double from junior first baseman Leila Dolfo and a RBI triple by redshirt-freshman shortstop Heather Mott. Senior center fielder Lindsay Kelso also had an RBI in the inning.
Key defensive plays also played a part in the Memphis victory. BCU loaded the bases with one out in the second inning, but Ashton Hinds hit a grounder to Mott at short who threw out Brandi Holley at home on the force.
The Wildcats again threatened to score in the fourth inning with a runner on third and no outs. BCU looked to have a deep enough ball to center on a fly by Sonya Urteaga, but Kelso ended the threat with a strong throw off the catch to keep the runner in place.
Memphis threatened to score in the third inning, but stranded the bases loaded. Dolfo drew a two-out walk and junior left fielder Leandra Hines and Kelso both had infield hits in the inning.
The Tigers will next compete in the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State beginning Friday in Tempe, Ariz. Memphis will play five games in the three-day tournament beginning with Texas Tech and Oklahoma State on Friday.
