TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Memphis softball team opened the Kajikawa Classic with a 5-3 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday.
The game was postponed on Friday due to a steady rain in the bottom of the third inning with Memphis holding a 4-0 lead. Play resumed on Saturday morning with a Texas Tech scoring threat. The Red Raiders had runners on first and second and Devin Zaragoza at the plate with a 3-1 count. But freshman lefty Janelle Valle fired a first pitch strike that was lined to Heather Mott at shortstop who turned a double play by tagging the runner at second.
The Tigers (3-3) never lost its first inning lead although Texas Tech (0-5) made it a close contest with two unearned runs in the seventh inning.
Valle (2-0) pitched the first complete game for Memphis this season en route to her second victory. She allowed one earned run on five hits and two strikeouts. Sarah Losleben (0-2) took the loss on the mound for TTU.
Memphis jumped to early lead in the first inning with four runs on two hits. Mott knocked in the first run on a single to the left side. Sophomore Leigh Rowan was then hit by the pitch to load the bases and was followed by Nance who was also hit by the pitch to bring home a run. A bases load walk to freshman Kim Sirman brought in Nance, and Rowan ended the drive by scoring on a wild pitch.
Junior Leila Dolfo scored in the fourth inning to give Memphis a 5-0 lead. Dolfo led off the inning with her second consecutive single and advanced to third on two illegal pitches by TTU's Tye Coats. Junior left fielder Leandra Hines then knocked in her first RBI of the season with a single up the middle.
Texas Tech scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo shot to right center by Montana Patin. The Red Raiders then scored two runs on one hit in the seventh inning and brought the tying run to the plate.
Memphis will next play later today No. 4/5 Arizona State at Farrington Stadium at 3:30 p.m. (MST) and Nebraska at 7:30 p.m. Both games can be followed live through Gametracker on GoTigersGo.com.
