GAME ONE: Memphis 6, Toledo 4 (6 inn.) – Reverted to 6th inning due to drop-dead time
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Memphis was the aggressor in the first inning with pitcher Mya Clark working through trouble in the first and gave herself early run support with a sacrifice fly.
- After a scoreless second for both sides, Toledo tied the contest in the top of the third with an RBI single by Audrey Miller.
- Memphis quickly regained the lead with back-to-back home runs from Clark and Kylie Waldrep to take a three-run lead after three innings played.
- The Tigers added to their lead after Isabella Hune reached on a fielding error and forced a rundown, which allowed Ariel Davis to score from third on the play.
- Hune scored during the next at-bat when Clark laced a double off the wall for her fourth RBI of the game.
- A single to shallow left and a two-run home run allowed Toledo to pull within two runs in the fifth inning.
- Despite the Rockets bringing the game level at six runs apiece in their final at-bats in the seventh inning off a sacrifice fly by Samantha Bolding and a double by Miller, the game was called due to a drop-dead travel time for Toledo, giving Memphis a 6-4 victory as NCAA rules stated the game would revert to the last completed inning. This negated the two runs scored by Toledo in the top of the seventh inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yet again, the Tigers took early control, this time with Taniyah Brown slugging a three-run home run, followed by an RBI single by Kennedy Semien to take an early 4-0 lead.
- Texas State answered quickly with a five-run first inning from a bases-loaded walk, two-RBI double, sacrifice fly and a double steal to hold a narrow lead after one.
- After Memphis went down in order, the Bobcats responded with two runs in the second on RBI hits by Karmyn Bass and Kate Bubela.
- The Tigers answered with a small-ball inning, with Paris Brienesse and Deana Cunningham reaching on bunt singles and being brought home by Semien on an RBI double.
- Semien later scored on a safety squeeze off the bat of Zereniti Sousa.
- Texas State regained its lead with three runs in the fourth on another RBI hit by Bass and a two-run home run by Aiyana Coleman.
- Both sides went scoreless in the fifth but the Bobcats added to their lead with two runs coming off an RBI double by Keely Williams, Bass' third RBI of the afternoon on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single off the bat of Savannah Coleman.
- Memphis was able to get one run back in the top of the seventh on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Cunningham before the Tigers' final out.
- With its win against Toledo, Memphis has won back-to-back road games to start the season for the first time since 2018.
- After the completion of today's contests, Memphis is outscoring opponents 25-24 and has a 9-5 advantage in scoring in both the first and third innings.
- Memphis had not allowed a first-inning run in either of its first two games against Toledo.
- Ariel Davis finished the day going 4-for-6 in the two contests with a triple and four runs scored.
- Davis leads Memphis through three games with seven hits and a .700 batting average.
- Mya Clark earned her first collegiate victory in the circle in four innings with three strikeouts while also going 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and four RBI.
- She sits tied with Kennedy Semien for the team lead with five total RBI.
- Taniyah Brown logged her first start of the year as the designated player, hitting her first home run of the year to give Memphis an early lead against the Bobcats.
- Isabella Hune made her first start of the season, drawing two walks and recording one run scored on the day.
- Kylie Waldrep followed a pair of her teammates from yesterday by hitting her first home run at Memphis against Toledo, also drawing a walk and scoring against Texas State.
- Neely Taylor started in the second game of the day, notching a hit and two runs scored.
- Paris Brienesse entered as a substitution against Texas State, recording two hits and a run scored.
- Deana Cunningham finished the day with two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
- Kennedy Semien continued to have early success as she drew two walks against Toledo and went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI against Texas State.
- Faith Brown logged one hit against the Bobcats.
- Zereniti Sousa drew a walk against Toledo and recorded an RBI sacrifice bunt against Texas State.
- Rylee Dugar made her first relief appearance of the season, earning a save against Toledo.
- It was the second career save for the senior pitcher and she has yet to allow an earned run in six innings in the circle.
- Dugar also made an appearance as a pinch runner against the Bobcats.
- Jazmine Chavez made her first appearance as a Tiger, striking out two over 2.1 relief innings.
- Taylor Caton made her first collegiate start as a pitcher and also made her second start at first base in the first game of the day against Toledo.
- Avery Stutts made her second appearance of the season, logging her first collegiate strikeout and finishing with four in 2.2 innings against Texas State.
