MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team fell 3-2 to Tulane in the opener of a three-game American Athletic Conference series at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field on Friday night.
The Tigers moved to 20-29 (7-15 AAC) overall while the Green Wave improved to 29-20 (12-10 AAC) on the season.
"The biggest thing is to bounce back tomorrow and take this one day at a time," head coach Matt Riser said. "There are some things we can clean up with our approach and plan … We have to continue to show up tomorrow and know the value of every single day. This is going to come down to the last day of the season, so keep the focus and come back ready tomorrow."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Tulane took an early lead in the top of the first inning when Connor Rasmussen singled to right field and drove in Gavin Schulz.
• Tiger first baseman Shane Cox wasted no time tying things back up, blasting his ninth home run of the season with a full count and two outs in the bottom of the first to even the score at a run apiece.
• Memphis added a run and took the lead in the bottom of the second when shortstop Creek Robertson drove in Chase Nixon with a sac-fly to right field.
• RHP Seth Garner, who made his 13th start of the season on the mound, was sharp early and threw zeroes on the board through the sixth inning after surrendering the run in the first frame.
• In the seventh, Garner recorded two quick outs before allowing a walk and a stolen base that led to an RBI single by Kaikea Harrison, tying the game at 2-2. The Tigers made a move to the bullpen as RHP Will Howell came to the mound to replace Garner. A walk, a wild pitch and an infield single by Schulz gave Tulane its first lead since the first inning.
• The Tigers were unable to gain any momentum offensively over the final three frames and the Green Wave held on for the 3-2, series-opening win.
NOTABLES
• Shane Cox's first-inning solo shot marked his ninth home run of the season. He ended the game 2-for-4 and tallied his 29th RBI of the campaign.
• Nixon finished the night 1-for-4 and scored a run.
• Freshman Michael Politte went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to eight games, also reaching base via walk. The St. Louis, Missouri, native has hit safely in 11 of the last 12 games and has reached base safely in all 12 of those contests.
• Justin Fogel ended the game 1-for-4 with a single.
• Robertson drove in his 19th run of the season.
• Garner threw 6.2 strong innings but was tagged with the loss to go to 3-7 on the season. He allowed three runs on five hits, striking out and walking three men apiece.
