May 06, 2025 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team cruised to an 11-1 run-rule victory over Mississippi Valley State in seven innings on Tuesday night at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field. Senior catcher Jonah Sutton went 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBI while RHP Connor Pittman earned his first win as a Tiger on the mound.
The Tigers earned win No. 20 and improved to 20-28 (7-14 AAC) overall while the Delta Devils dropped to 11-24 on the season.
"Not a pretty game by any means, but at the end of the day we got the job done," head coach Matt Riser said. "Connor Pittman went out there and gave us a strong outing and made some big pitches when he needed to … We got the win like we needed to and got our work in, but now the focus goes right back to the conference and keeping this thing rolling."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Pittman got his first start of his Memphis career and was effective early, retiring seven of the first nine batters he faced.
• The Delta Devils scratched across the game's first run in the top of the third inning on a ground out to first base.
• The Tigers tied the game at a run apiece on a fielding error by the MVSU second baseman with one out in the bottom of the third.
• Memphis took the lead with bottom of the fourth on a bases-loaded RBI single to center field off the bat of Justin Fogel. With two outs and the bases full, Chase Nixon sparked the offense for an eight-run inning (seven with two outs) with a bases-clearing double to right-center field. Freshman Michael Politte followed that up with an RBI double to score Nixon and fellow freshman Jack Pitts walked to set the table for Jonah Sutton, who delivered a three-run shot to left field to cap off the eight-run frame.
• The Delta Devils put two men on with two outs in the fifth inning and prompted a Memphis move to the bullpen, going with right-hander Logan Stelling, who recorded the final out of the inning via ground out to get the Tigers out of the jam unscathed.
• Sutton picked up his fourth RBI of the contest with a sac-fly that scored Seth Cox in the bottom of the sixth, extending the Tigers' lead to 10-1.
• RHP Hayden Donahue entered in relief of Stelling and struck out the side in a three up, three down top of the seventh.
• Center fielder Cade Greer led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double down the left-field line to set Shane Cox up for his second walk-off hit of the season. On an 0-1 count, the Munford, Tennessee, native came through with an RBI single to left-center field to score Greer and end the game early.
