Tigers Fall to Pirates in Series Finale

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped its series finale at preseason American Athletic Conference favorite East Carolina, 11-1, in seven innings on Sunday afternoon at Lewis Field at Clark LeClair Stadium.
The Tigers moved to 11-12 (0-3 AAC) on the season while the Pirates improved to 15-9 (3-0 AAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Two-way player James Smith IV made his first start on the mound as a Tiger after starting the first 22 games of the year in center field.
• East Carolina got on the board in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out, two-run double by Austin Irby.
• The Pirates added a pair of runs on back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 4-0.
• In the top of the fifth, Tiger right fielder Cade Greer went opposite field for a solo shot to put Memphis on the board. The solo home run marked the first big fly for Greer as a Tiger.
• The Pirates struck for five runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 9-1.
• Pinch-hitter Davin Whitaker hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it a 10-run lead and end the game in seven innings, 11-1.
NOTABLES
• Greer homered for the first time as a Tiger and ended the game 1-for-2, adding a walk.
• Daniel Perez ended the game 1-for-3 with a single.
• Creek Robertson and Jonah Sutton each recorded a walk.
• Smith IV went 1.2 innings on the mound before moving to designated hitter and being relieved by Davis Oswalt. Smith IV was tagged with the loss (0-2) after allowing two runs on one hit, a walk and two hit batsmen.
• Oswalt (1.1), Charlie Smith (2.0), Logan Rushing (1.0) and Michael Dallas (0.1) combined to throw the final 4.2 innings.
• With the loss, the Tigers dropped below .500 (11-12) for the first time this season.
• The series loss marks just the second time this season that Memphis has dropped a series.

• The Tigers head to Oxford, Mississippi, on Tuesday night for the first of two games this season with No. 18 Ole Miss (17-5). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Swayze Field.
