Tigers Come Up Short vs. No. 15 Rebels in Oxford
Mar 25, 2025 | Baseball
The Tigers moved to 11-13 (0-3 AAC) on the season while the No. 15 Rebels improved to 19-5 (4-2 SEC).
"We're competing the right way," head coach Matt Riser said. "You have to keep believing even when you're not finding the result you want. We're competing the right way. The bats are hopefully starting to awaken a little bit. I think we're taking strides and had more competitive at-bats tonight, which was good to see."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Rebels struck first with a two-out solo shot from Campbell Smithwick in the bottom of the second.
• Memphis got the offense going in the top of the third when Creek Robertson led off the inning being hit by a pitch. Seth Cox followed that up with a double down the left-field line before a single to left field by Daniel Perez scored Robertson to tie the game at a run apiece. Cade Greer grounded into a double play later in the inning, but Seth Cox came home to give Memphis a 2-1 lead on the play.
• A two-out single by Rebel Brayden Randle in the bottom of the fourth inning tied the game at 2-2 before Ole Miss struck for a four-run fifth to take a 6-2 lead. The damage was done on an RBI single, a sac-fly and then a two-out, two-run double by Randle.
• In the top of the sixth, Tiger third baseman Will Vasseur smoked a line drive, two-run shot over the Memphis bullpen in left field for his first home run as a Tiger to trim the Rebel lead to a pair.
• In the seventh, Memphis added a run when Jonah Sutton took off for third base and Seth Cox found the hole in the defense to score the man in motion and make it a one-run game.
• Ole Miss got a run back in the bottom of the eighth on a solo home run by Mitchell Sanford to extend the lead back to a pair.
• The Tigers got the tying run to the plate with two outs in the ninth, but a deep fly out from Robertson ended it, as the Rebels hung on to win, 7-5.
