Tigers Pick Up Series-Opening Win at LA Tech
Feb 28, 2025 | Baseball
RUSTON, La. – The University of Memphis baseball team went on the road and defeated Louisiana Tech, 7-2, at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston, Louisiana, to earn a series-opening win over the Bulldogs.
The Tigers improved to 6-3 overall with the win while the Bulldogs dropped to 5-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• RHP Seth Garner made his third start of the year and had his best outing yet. After working a scoreless first inning, the Bulldogs got on the board with a one-out double from Grant Comeaux. That would be the only run LA Tech dinged Garner for in his six innings of work.
• Memphis got on the board and tied the game at 1-1 when left fielder Chase Nixon connected for his first home run as a Tiger – a no-doubt shot to right field. An RBI double from Shane Cox gave Memphis the lead later in the inning as James Smith IV came around to score.
• The game remained 2-1 until the Tigers broke through with a five-run seventh inning, started off with a one-out RBI double by catcher Jonah Sutton. Shortstop Creek Robertson followed suit with an RBI double of his own that scored Sutton. Will Vasseur continued the scoring with a sac-fly before Nixon came to the plate and slugged his second home run of the game, a two-run shot to make the score 7-1, Tigers.
• The Bulldogs got a run with two outs in the ninth inning, but it was too little, too late as the Tigers hung on to win, 7-2.
NOTABLES
• Garner went six innings and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out four and walking one to earn the win and improve to 1-0 on the season. He lowered his ERA to 2.87 on the year.
• Nixon had a breakout game as a Tiger, going 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and three RBI. He also walked once.
• Sutton had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored.
• Robertson ended the night 1-for-4 with an RBI double and scored a run.
• Vasseur went 1-for-4 with a sac-fly and an RBI.
