RUSTON, La. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped game two of a three-game series to Louisiana Tech, 11-4, on Saturday afternoon at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston, Louisiana.
The Tigers dropped to 6-4 overall while the Bulldogs improved to 6-4 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• LA Tech jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Michael Ballard homered to left field off Memphis starter David Case.
• Case settled in after the first frame, working scoreless second, third and fourth innings.
• The Tigers cut the lead to a run in the top of the fifth inning when Will Vasseur scored on a wild pitch.
• The Bulldogs got that run back in the bottom of the fifth on a one-out RBI single by Eli Berch.
• LA Tech struck for three more runs in the sixth inning on an RBI double by lead off man Garrison Berkley and a home run from designated hitter Colton Coates.
• Memphis fought back for three runs of its own in the top of the seventh to trim the Bulldog lead back down to a pair of runs. An RBI ground out by freshman DH Carter McKay led to a clutch two-out, two-run single back up the middle by catcher Jonah Sutton, making the score 6-4, Bulldogs.
• However, the Bulldogs answered in the bottom half of the seventh when right fielder Cade Patterson delivered the big blow – a grand slam to right field that made it a 10-4 lead for LA Tech. The Bulldogs tacked on one more later in the inning and held on to win, 11-4.
NOTABLES
• Vasseur had his best game as a Tiger offensively, going 4-for-5 with four singles from the lead off spot, also scoring a run. It marked the first four-hit game for a Tiger since April 14, 2024, when former Tiger Will Marcy had four hits against UTSA.
• Smith IV went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
• Sutton ended the day 1-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of walks.
