NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Memphis baseball team is back in action this weekend with a three-game American Athletic Conference series at Tulane in New Orleans, Louisiana, at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday night with the Sunday finale scheduled for 1 p.m. Jeff Brightwell will have the audio call on GoTigersGo.com for all three games, which can also be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Tigers (19-26, 6-12 AAC) run-ruled Arkansas-Pine Bluff at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field in Memphis on Tuesday night, 17-2, in seven innings. Memphis will look to carry that success back into the conference slate after dropping a pair of AAC series to Charlotte and No. 5 East Carolina the past two weekends. The Tigers enter the weekend in 10th place in the conference but are just three games out of third place and two games back from sixth.
Greer Field at Turchin Stadium will play host to the 120th, 121st and 122nd all-time meetings between the Tigers and Green Wave. Tulane leads the all-time series 72-47 and took four of seven games from Memphis in 2023.
The Memphis offense is averaging 6.8 runs per game to rank fifth in The American (304 total). The Tigers' 60 long balls rank second in the AAC and 75th in the nation while their 87 doubles rank 77th in the NCAA and third in the league.
The Tigers' 74 stolen bases rank second in the conference and 40th nationally while their 234 walks drawn rank 51st in the NCAA to lead The American. Defensively, Memphis has turned the third-most double plays in the country (46).
Junior outfielder Pierre Seals is slashing a team-best .325/.577/.429 on the season with 15 stolen bases to lead the club (fifth-most in AAC). His 94 total bases are second on the team to only Jacob Compton, and his nine home runs are second-most on the squad. Seals was named to the AAC's Weekly Honor Roll on April 15 after leading the league in hitting (.583) with a pair of home runs against UTSA (April 11-13).
Compton, the 2022 American RBI leader, is tied for the conference lead with 13 home runs and ranks third in the league with 45 RBI. He's slashing .285/.588/.372 to go with nine doubles and a triple on the season.
Bahamian second baseman Daunte Stuart ranks second on the team with a .322 batting average and ranks second in the AAC with 15 doubles. Stuart's 43 runs scored lead the club and he's been on base in 62 of his past 63 games dating back to last season.
Closer Brayden Sanders has recorded seven saves – good for 21st in the country and the conference lead. In 23.2 innings, the hard-throwing junior holds a 3.42 ERA with 33 punch outs.
RHP David Warren was named AAC Pitcher of the Week on April 2 after his career outing vs. Florida Atlantic on March 28. He went 7.1 innings and notched a career-high 10 strikeouts to help Memphis to its second conference win of the season against the Owls. He came back and threw a career-high 8.0 innings April 5 at Rice (3 R, 7 H, 3 K, 1 BB) to help the Tigers win a 15-inning thriller. On the year, Warren is 4-3 with a 5.12 ERA over 63.1 innings of work with 44 strikeouts to lead the squad. The staff veteran has gone five-plus innings in all but three of his starts this season, and seven-plus innings in four of his 11 starts.
Offensively, Tulane is led by Brady Marget (.348 AVG, 8 HR, 43 RBI), Gavin Schulz (.312 AVG, 8 HR, 38 RBI) and Preseason AAC Player of the Year Teo Banks (.243 AVG, 12 HR, 41 RBI). They carry a team ERA of 5.24 and opponents are batting .276 off of Green Wave pitching.
