Tigers Fall to Green Wave, 9-5, in Game One of Series
May 03, 2024 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped game one of a three-game American Athletic Conference series to Tulane, 9-5, on Friday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Tigers dropped to 19-27 overall (6-13 AAC) with the loss as the Green Wave improved to 26-20 overall (10-9 AAC) with the win.
"Tonight was a tale of two different teams," head coach Matt Riser said. "We were unresponsive after the first inning until the fifth, then we decided to turn up and compete the way we should. I told the team I'm tired of being the pillow of this conference and it's time to do something about it. If we compete like we did the second half of the game, we are going to be in good shape."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Green Wave struck first when Connor Rasmussen slugged a two-out, three-run home run to left field, giving Tulane an early 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning.
• Tulane added to its lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Brady Marget and a run-scoring single by Rasmussen.
• The Memphis offense came to life in the fifth inning and plated a pair of runs with two down in the frame. A hustle RBI double by Austin Baskin drove in Alex Fernandes and Daunte Stuart singled back up the middle to score Baskin just a few pitches later to trim the Tulane lead to three.
• The Green Wave used five walks and a two-run single by Rasmussen to plate four runs in the fifth and grow the lead to 9-2.
• Memphis rallied for three runs in the seventh, started off with a leadoff single by Jonah Sutton. Three-consecutive walks drawn by Baskin, Stuart and Pierre Seals forced in Sutton for a run and loaded the bases for Jacob Compton. Compton delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to make the score 9-5.
• The Tigers threatened in the eighth and ninth innings with multiple base runners but could not get them in, as they dropped the first game of the series by a final of 9-5.
NOTABLES
• Lefty reliever Brandon Chorzelewski was a bright spot in the loss. He threw four scoreless innings and struck out a career-high seven batters while allowing just one hit.
• Compton went 1-for-4 and drove in his 46th and 47th runs of the season.
• Baskin, Stuart and Seals all tallied a hit and drove in a run. Baskin scored twice and Stuart scored once.
• Sutton ended the night 1-for-3 and scored a run.
• Fernandes scored a run and stole a base.
• Right-handed starter David Warren was tagged with the loss after going four innings and allowing six runs on four hits, walking four and striking out three.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers are back at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium tomorrow night for game two of the series with the Green Wave with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
