Tigers Drop Series Opener to Shockers
May 16, 2024 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped the opener of a three-game American Athletic Conference series to Wichita State, 14-1, in eight innings at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field in the Bluff City on Thursday night.
The Tigers fell to 22-31 overall (9-16 AAC) with the loss as the Shockers improved to 28-26 (14-11 AAC) overall.
"Really disappointing," head coach Matt Riser said. "It was a 1-0 type of game early and we hit some balls hard and competed early. Once they threw the big blow and went up 7-0 and we didn't respond with runs after we loaded the bases, it felt like we threw in the towel, and that isn't going to be our identity. At the end of the day, I hate losing, but I can live with giving a full effort and getting beat. What we did tonight halfway through that game, I will not live with, and I will make sure changes before next season."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game remained scoreless through three innings as both teams struggled to get any offense going. In the top of the fourth, the Shockers got on the board with a one-out RBI single by Mauricio Millan.
• A two-out, two-run home run by Jordan Rogers in the top of the fifth inning gave the Shockers a 3-0 lead.
• Wichita State added on with a four-run seventh inning to extend its lead to 7-0.
• Jacob Compton came in to score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to put Memphis on the board and make it a 7-1 game.
• In the top of the eighth, the Shockers plated seven runs on five walks, a hit batsman, a wild pitch and three singles to grow their lead to 14-1.
• The Tigers went down quietly and were sat down in order in the bottom half of the eighth to give the Shockers the eight-inning victory.
NOTABLES
• David Warren made his 14th start of the season and went 4.2 innings while allowing three runs on six hits, striking out four and walking four. He was tagged with the loss to drop to 4-6 on the season.
• Ethan Vandament faced one batter and got him to fly out to centerfield to keep his perfect season ERA intact (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K).
• Baskin reached base via walk to make it 61 of his past 66 games in which he's reached base safely.
• Alex Fernandes doubled in the first inning – his fifth two-bagger of the season.
• Compton went 1-for-3 and scored the lone Tiger run.
• Pierre Seals ended the night 1-for-1 with a pair of walks.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers are back in action tomorrow night for game two of the series with Wichita State. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
