Tigers Fall to Shockers in 13-Inning, Six-Hour Marathon
May 18, 2024 | Baseball
The five-hour and 58-minute marathon marked the longest game by time in program history, eclipsing the record of five hours and 22 minutes vs. Middle Tennessee State University set in 2008.
The Tigers fell to 22-32 overall (9-17 AAC) with the loss as the Shockers improved to 29-26 (15-11 AAC) and officially eliminated Memphis from an AAC Tournament bid to Clearwater, Florida, next week.
"I'm proud of how the guys bounced back tonight," head coach Matt Riser said. "I know it hurts to fight that long [and not win]. They knew what they were fighting for. I couldn't be more proud of them and I hope my kids were watching tonight. Guys like Jake Curtis and a few of those seniors who are just gutting it out. They're leaving it all out there, and the game plan is to send them out on a good note tomorrow with a win."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Brennan DuBose led the game off with a home run for the Tigers in the bottom of the first inning, taking an 0-2 pitch 386 feet to left field for his ninth big fly of the season.
• A two-out, two-run home run by Shocker Seth Stroh gave Wichita State its first lead of the game in the top of the second. The Shockers added a run in the top of the fourth on a two-out RBI single to extend their lead to 3-1.
• DuBose drove in his second run of the game with a two-out RBI single over the shortstop's head to cut the Shocker lead to a run.
• In the fifth, a single to right field and an error resulted in a little-league style, two-run inside-the-park home run for Wichita State's Kam Durnin that made the score 5-2, Shockers.
• Memphis responded with a six-run bottom of the fifth to take an 8-5 lead. A two-run double to right-center field by Riley Davis plated the first pair before Davis eventually came in to score on a passed ball. A two-out RBI single by Daunte Stuart drove in Shane Cox and DuBose, and then the Tigers executed a first and third double steal to perfection, allowing Alex Fernandes to take home for the sixth run of the frame.
• The Shockers chipped away at the Memphis lead and plated a run in the seventh before tying the game at eight runs apiece on a one-out, two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning.
• Wichita State took a 10-8 lead in the top of the 11th inning on a two-out, two-run double by Lane Haworth, but the Tigers would not go down without a fight.
• Down to their final out in the bottom of the 11th, Cox delivered a two-run single over the diving WSU second baseman's head to tie the game at 10-10 and force a 12th inning.
• The Shockers took a 12-10 lead in the top of the 13th after back-to-back bases-loaded walks to force in runs.
• CJ Willis worked a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 13th to bring the tying run to the plate for the Tigers, but they could not bring him in as they dropped the extra-inning marathon, 12-10.
NOTABLES
• The Tigers used 23 different players in the five-hour and 58-minute game. Memphis used nine players in the seven-spot in the lineup alone.
• The two teams combined to use 16 pitchers (Wichita State; 10, Memphis; 6) and threw 566 total pitches.
• Starting shortstop Jake Curtis made two different appearances on the mound. The two-way player pitched the seventh and eighth innings before returning to the mound for the final out of the 13th inning.
• DuBose ended the night 2-for-4 with the leadoff home run, two RBI, two runs and two walks.
• Cox tallied three hits, drove in a pair of runs, scored once and walked once from the bottom of the Memphis lineup.
• Davis was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, a pair of runs and a pair of RBI.
• Stuart drove in a pair of runs and finished the night 2-for-6 with a walk and a stolen base.
• Pierre Seals ended the game 2-for-6 with a walk and two runs scored.
• Seth Garner made his eighth start of the season on the mound. The right-hander went four innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits, striking out three and walking a pair to take a no decision.
• Curtis went two innings on the mound in the seventh and eighth and struck out all six batters he retired. He returned to the mound for the final out of the 13th inning after starting the game and playing the ninth-12th innings at shortstop.
• JT Durham took the loss on the mound after throwing 1.2 innings and allowing a pair of runs on one hit and four walks while also striking out four Shockers.
