MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team fell to No. RV Mississippi State, 6-4, on Tuesday night at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field in front of 1,612 fans to mark the third-largest crowd in FedExPark history.
The Tigers dropped a to 18-23 overall (6-9 AAC) with the loss as the Bulldogs improved to 27-14 overall (10-8 SEC).
"Clean, back-and-forth ball game," head coach Matt Riser said. "It came down to execution at the end of the day. They executed a little better than we did. We need to do a few more things offensively to score some more runs. Kudos to their bullpen arms, but I thought our staff did a really good job of keeping us in the game."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. An RBI single by Dakota Jordan plated the first run and another run-scoring single by Connor Hujsak brought in the second.
• Memphis got on the board in the bottom of the second, tying the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs. An RBI triple off the top of the center-field batter's eye by Pierre Seals drove in Daunte Stuart, and on the very next pitch, Jacob Compton doubled off the left-field wall to score Seals and knotted the game at two runs apiece.
• Jordan came back to the plate for the Bulldogs and mashed his 16th long ball of the season, a three-run shot that snuck just inside the left-field foul pole to put Mississippi State back in front, 5-2, in the top of the third.
• The Tigers clawed back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to get back within a run of the Bulldogs. A perfectly executed hit-and-run by Will Marcy gave the Tigers runners at first and third, and a stealing Marcy pulled the shortstop from his position the next at-bat to allow Jake Curtis to single through the left side and drive in Alex Fernandes. A double steal by the Tigers later in the inning allowed Marcy to score from third to make the score 5-4, Bulldogs.
