Tigers Drop Series Opener at Charlotte, 6-4
Apr 19, 2024 | Baseball
The Tigers dropped a to 18-20 overall (6-7 AAC) with the loss as the 49ers improved to 17-21 overall (6-7 AAC).
"We came out good and scored three runs early," head coach Matt Riser said. "We'd have liked to have some better at-bats in the middle part of the game and score a few more obviously, but kudos to them. They did a good job of manufacturing some runs and then threw the big punch late. I told the guys to stay persistent in our pursuit of what we're trying to do."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after they plated a pair of runs in the first inning and a third run in the second frame.
• Centerfielder Will Marcy led the game off with his 11th double of the season and scored when Austin Baskin reached on a fielder's choice. A sacrifice fly by Jacob Compton brought Baskin home to make the score 2-0, and catcher Brennan DuBose slugged a leadoff solo shot in the top of the second to make it a three-run lead.
• The 49ers chipped away at the Memphis lead with one run apiece in the second through fifth innings to take a 4-3 lead.
• A one-out RBI triple by Shane Taylor in the bottom of the seventh inning followed by an RBI double by Brandon Stahlman gave Charlotte a 6-3 lead.
• The Tigers loaded the bases in the top of the ninth on a trio of walks but were unable to pull off the comeback. Alex Fernandes scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the inning, but that was all Memphis got as they dropped the series opener, 6-4.
