MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team is back in action this weekend with a three-game American Athletic Conference series at league-newcomer Charlotte. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Friday night, 1 p.m. Saturday and noon for Sunday's finale.
All three games will be available on GoTigersGo.com via audio stream with Jeff Brightwell on the call and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Tigers (18-19, 6-6 AAC) are coming off a series at home last weekend with AAC-leader UTSA who took two games and the series from Memphis. The Tigers won 12-5 over the Roadrunners on Saturday afternoon as Seth Garner improved to 2-0 and Luke Ellis earned his second-consecutive Saturday save in long relief.
Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium will play host to the 28th, 29th and 30th all-time meetings between the Tigers and 49ers. The series marks the first meeting between the two programs since 2005, with Charlotte leading the all-time series, 15-12.
The 49ers (16-21, 5-7 AAC) are coming off a midweek loss at No. 6 Clemson on Tuesday night. Charlotte dropped its conference series to No. 9 East Carolina last weekend in Greenville, N.C., but won the Sunday finale 8-7 to avoid the sweep.
The Memphis offense is averaging 6.97 runs per game to rank fourth in The American (258). The Tigers' 51 long balls are good for second-most in the AAC and rank 61st in the nation while their 72 doubles rank 73rd in the NCAA and fourth in the league.
The Tigers' 64 stolen bases rank second in the conference and 39th nationally while their 193 walks drawn rank 53rd in the NCAA to lead the American. Defensively, Memphis has turned the 26th-most double plays in the country (32).
Junior outfielder Pierre Seals is slashing a team-best .328/.584/.436 on the season with 13 stolen bases to lead the club and rank fourth in the AAC. His 80 total bases lead the team, and his nine home runs are tied with Jacob Compton for the team lead (T-No. 3 in AAC). Compton, the 2022 American RBI leader, leads the squad and ranks fourth in the AAC with 33 RBI to go with his nine big flies. Seals was named to the AAC's Weekly Honor Roll on April 15 after leading the league in hitting (.583 AVG.) with a pair of home runs a week ago.
Bahamian second baseman Daunte Stuart ranks second on the team with a .322 batting average on the season and is tied for the AAC lead with 14 doubles. Stuart has scored 38 runs to lead the squad and rank sixth in the conference.
Closer Brayden Sanders has recorded seven saves – good for sixth-most in the country and the conference lead. His 1.74 ERA in 20.2 innings (30 K) leads the team.
RHP David Warren was named AAC Pitcher of the Week on April 2 after his career outing vs. Florida Atlantic on March 29. He went 7.1 innings and notched a career-high 10 strikeouts to help Memphis to its second conference win of the season against the Owls. He came back and threw a career-high eight innings on April 5 at Rice (3 R, 7 H, 3 K, 1 BB) to help the Tigers win a 15-inning thriller. On the year, Warren is 4-1 (2-0 AAC) with a 4.14 ERA over 54.1 innings of work with 40 strikeouts. The staff veteran has gone seven-plus innings in four of his nine starts this season.
Offensively, Charlotte is led by Thad Ector (.301 AVG., 4 HR, 17 RBI), Noah Furcht (.297 AVG., 5 HR, 24 RBI) and power-threat Juan Correa (.266 AVG., 10 HR, 25 RBI).
