
Tigers Prepare for Midweek Matchups Against Mississippi State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team prepares for back-to-back midweek games as they travel to Mississippi State Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. before coming home for a matchup with Arkansas-Pine Bluff Wednesday night with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Tigers (4-33, 1-17 AAC) dropped their series to American Athletic Conference newcomer UAB this past weekend at Mary Bowers Field in Birmingham, Alabama and are looking to get back into the win column with these midweek games.
This will be the 14th all-time meeting between Memphis and Mississippi State with the Bulldogs remaining undefeated against the Tigers. Memphis will be facing off against Arkansas-Pine Bluff for the 11th time and will look to keep its unbeaten streak against the Golden Lions alive. Last time out the Tigers took the game 6-1 at Tiger Softball Complex.
"These midweek games are another opportunity for us to compete. We need a good start from our pitchers and clean defense to give us a shot," head coach Stephanie VanBrakle Prothro said. "If we can figure that out and execute our game plan, we can compete with anyone."
Arianna Cox-Cole leads the Tigers at the plate with a .272 batting average this year while tallying 12 runs on 25 hits and two homers. McKaylee Polk and Zoe Adebayo follow closely with a .267 and .261 average, respectively.
Adebayo continues to lead Memphis tallying her 14th RBI this past weekend against the Blazers. Cox-Cole and Polk shot up to nine a piece on the season.
Taniyah Brown holds down the circle with 109.1 innings of work in 24 appearances this season and has recorded 65 strikeouts this season. Rylee Dugar follows with 64.1 innings pitched and recently recorded a 2.84 ERA against UAB last weekend.
No. 17/16 Mississippi State (29-12, 9-9 SEC) is currently on a two-game losing streak after dropping its conference series 2-1 to No. 4 Tennessee last weekend. The Bulldogs also boast a 16-6 record when playing at home this season.
Mississippi State is hitting .328 while holding opponents to hit a .223 average. The Bulldogs are led offensively by Madisyn Kennedy with a .380 batting average along with tallying 35 hits and 20 runs while bringing in a team high of 51 RBI. She is followed by Sierra Sacco (.363) and Jessie Blaine (.350). Paige Cook and Blaine also account for the second most RBI on the team notching 28 apiece this season.
The Bulldogs have a team ERA of 3.07 and are led in the circle by Josey Marron with a 2.93 ERA recording nine wins and two saves in 95.2 innings of work. She is trailed by Aspen Wesley who owns a 3.76 ERA with 11 wins and two saves in 85.2 innings pitched.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (15-18, 6-7 SWAC) currently owns a four-game losing streak after dropping its conference series to Alcorn State last weekend. The Golden Lions will play a double header against Rust Tuesday, April 16, before heading to the Bluff City to take on the Tigers.
The Golden Lions are currently .231 at the plate while keeping it close with their competition allowing a slightly higher .236 average. Arkansas-Pine Bluff is led offensively by Amari Broughton with a .375 batting average along with tallying 33 hits and 15 runs while leading with 21 RBI and two home runs. She is trailed by Lauryn Adams (.273) and Jada Carhee (.270). The Golden Lions have recorded 112 runs with 99 RBI this season.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff owns a team 2.71 ERA being led in the circle by Kayla Adams with a 1.00 ERA, 11 wins and 161 strikeouts in 112.0 innings of work. Danika Bryant follows with a 2.95 ERA tallying two wins and 70 strikeouts in 59.1 innings pitched.
