Tigers Drop Series in Pitchers Dual to Blazers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Memphis softball team dropped its series finale to UAB, 1-0, in another pitchers dual Sunday afternoon at Mary Bowers Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Tigers (4-33, 1-17 AAC) found contact early, putting pressure on the Blazer defense. The Memphis defense held strong through six innings, allowing only one run on four hits while snagging run-saving stops throughout the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Marley Maness got things moving for the Tigers in the top of the second inning, recording the first hit of the game with a single to center field which allowed LaNya Bates to reach second base. Presley Morris followed with a sacrifice bunt to push both runners into scoring position. Arianna Cox-Cole then drew a two-out walk to load the bases, however, the Tigers came up empty to strand the runners.
• With runners in scoring position for UAB in the bottom of the third, Kennedy Semien and McKaylee Polk recorded back-to-back fielder's choices to end the Blazers threat and keep the game scoreless.
• UAB loaded the bases on a one-out single through the left side in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a strikeout from the Tigers, UAB's Bella Wiggins drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Blazers in front, 1-0.
• Semien ripped a two-out single for Memphis in the top of the fifth frame. Zoe Adebayo followed with a walk that advanced Semien into scoring position, however, they would be left stranded to end the top of the inning.
• In the sixth, Polk came out swinging with a one-out single up the middle before reaching second on an error. The Tigers would run out of luck as the Blazers turned a double play from the hot corner to end the frame.
• Pinch-hitter Francesca Lumpp singled up the middle to open the top of the seventh, giving the Tigers momentum. Lumpp moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Semien before being left stranded to end the game.
NOTABLES
• Memphis had four different players tally hits in the matchup: Semien, Polk, Lumpp and Maness.
• Taniyah Brown got the start in the circle recording 4.0 innings of work with two strikeouts and two hits. Abigail Morgan entered in the top of the fifth inning in relief and tossed the final two innings.
