Memphis Falls to UAB in Closely Contested Game Two

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Memphis softball team dropped a closely contested pitchers dual to UAB, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Mary Bowers Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Tigers (4-32, 1-16 AAC) found contact early with the ball, putting runners on base to open the first two innings. The Blazers (19-22, 10-7 AAC) put a run up in the second inning before fighting back and forth with the Memphis defense. The Tigers evened the score on a one-run bomb from Marley Maness in the top of the fifth. Memphis was unable to overtake UAB as the Blazers hit a walk off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to secure the series win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Memphis notched a hit early in the top of the first as Drue Thomas singled to third base pushing Khamiyah Brown to second. The runners would be left stranded in the opening frame.
• The Blazers got on the board first as Lilly Crowe hit a sacrifice fly to left center field allowing Ant Henderson in for the run in the bottom of the second inning.
• The Tigers evened the score as Maness sent her first solo shot of the season flying over the center field wall in the top of the fifth.
• Rylee Dugar continued to pitch lights out for the Tigers, retiring back-to-back batters to close out the sixth frame, keeping the game tied at one a piece.
• Arianna Cox-Cole recorded a hit for Memphis as she singled to left field, looking to take the lead late in the game in the top of the seventh. Cox-Cole would be left stranded unable to push the Tigers forward.
• The Blazers drew two walks on one out, putting Kaily Collett in scoring position as Hannah Miles came up to the plate in the bottom of the seventh Frame. Miles singled through the left side bringing in Collett to secure the win in walk off fashion.
NOTABLES
• Memphis had four different players tally hits in the matchup: Zoe Adebayo, Cox-Cole, Thomas and Maness.
• Maness went 1-for-3 recording her first home run of the season.
• Dugar got the start in the circle recording 6.1 innings of work with three strikeouts allowing just three hits through the game.
