MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team won its third-straight game on Friday night, defeating the University of New Orleans, 5-4, to take game one of the series at Maestri Field in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The Tigers got back to .500 (10-10) overall with the win while the Privateers fell to 8-9 on the season.
"Great Friday-night battle. We needed one like that where we just grinded it out," head coach Matt Riser said. "It was a great team effort. We got a big hit and got some big pitches late."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• A four-run first inning by the Tigers was the bulk of their offensive production for the night. A pair of Privateer errors and a single by Will Marcy loaded the bases for Daunte Stuart who delivered an RBI single to put Memphis on the board. A two-out, bases-clearing double by Seth Cox scored three Tigers and put them up 4-0 early.
• Right-handed starting pitcher David Warren was locked in from the start, allowing his first hit in the third frame. He did allow a single run in the third on a sac-fly but rolled through the first three innings in just 30 pitches.
• The Tigers tacked on a run in the sixth on an errant throw by the UNO pitcher on a failed pickoff attempt. Stuart scored from third and Pierre Seals advanced from first to third on the play. The Privateers got that run right back in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout to trim the Memphis lead back to three.
• Warren rolled through the seventh one-two-three before hitting a batter and walking the next one, leading to closer Brayden Sanders entering the game in relief. UNO's Miguel Useche doubled to the left-field corner to score a pair and cut its deficit to one.
• Sanders got out of the eighth with a strikeout and punched out another pair in the ninth to lock down his fourth save of the season and seal the 5-4 win for the Tigers.
NOTABLES
• Warren went 7.0 innings and allowed four runs on just three hits, striking out a pair to earn the win and improve to 2-1 on the season.
• Stuart finished the night 2-for-4 with his AAC-leading 10th double of the year, scored twice and drove in a run in the win.
• Cox drove in three runs with his two-out, bases-clearing double in the first inning.
• Marcy ended the game 1-for-4 with a single and a run scored.
• Sanders recorded the last six outs and earned his fourth save of the season. He struck out three and allowed just one hit.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers and Privateers will finish the series with a double-header tomorrow starting at 2 p.m. due to rain in Sunday's forecast.
